Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Suburbs

Two weeks had passed since the courtroom bombshell. Life in Arthur’s apartment had settled into a peaceful, joyous rhythm. Without the toxic cloud of Victoria’s influence hanging over them, Lily was thriving. Her laughter filled the rooms as they baked cookies together, painted watercolor masterpieces on the kitchen floor, and read bedtime stories until they both fell asleep.
Arthur had secured a remote consulting contract that allowed him to work from home while being a full-time father. For the first time in his life, he felt truly content.
Until Thursday evening.
It was raining heavily outside. The wind rattled the windowpanes of the apartment complex. Arthur was in the kitchen washing dinner dishes while Lily sat on the living room rug, building a towering castle out of magnetic blocks with her trusty teddy bear, Barnaby, sitting as the "guard" at the front gate.
Suddenly, the apartment's smart doorbell chimed.
Arthur glanced at the wall-mounted intercom screen. Expecting his grocery delivery, he pressed the view button.
Instead of a delivery driver, the screen showed a tall, imposing man in a dark trench coat standing under the flickering porch light, the rain pouring off the brim of his fedora. It wasn't Victoria. It was a man Arthur had never seen before—rugged, scarred across the left jawline, with cold, dead eyes staring directly into the camera lens.
"Can I help you?" Arthur spoke through the intercom speaker, his instincts instantly flaring.
"Package delivery for Arthur Hayes," a gravelly voice responded. "Requires a signature in person. Open the door, Mr. Hayes."
Arthur frowned. No legitimate courier delivers packages at 9:00 PM in a torrential downpour requiring an in-person signature.
"Leave it at the door," Arthur said firmly.
The man on the screen didn't move. Instead, he reached inside his trench coat. Through the grainy night-vision lens, Arthur saw the unmistakable metallic gleam of a crowbar.
"Daddy?" Lily called out softly from the living room, her small voice cutting through the hum of the refrigerator. "Who's at the door? Is it a monster?"
Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs. He muted the intercom, sprinted to the living room, scooped Lily up, and rushed her into the back bedroom, locking the door behind them.
"Listen to me, sweetheart," Arthur said, kneeling down and looking urgently into her eyes. "Daddy needs you to play the 'quiet mouse' game in the closet. Hide under my heavy winter coats with Barnaby. Don't make a sound, no matter what you hear. Can you do that for Daddy?"
Lily nodded bravely, her eyes wide with fear as she crawled into the dark, safe space of the closet.
Arthur closed the closet door, grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker from the corner of the bedroom, and crept stealthily back toward the front entrance.

CRASH.
The front door splintered inward as the heavy wood frame gave way under a brutal, targeted kick. The unknown intruder stepped into the dim hallway of the apartment, water dripping from his boots, ready to finish a job that Victoria’s family had outsourced to the criminal underworld.
