Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The next two hours felt like an eternity inside Courtroom 4B.

Judge Sterling meticulously reviewed the evidence presented on the flash drives. The security footage from the foyer played silently on the overhead courtroom monitors. The video didn't lie: it showed Arthur holding Lily protectively, speaking in measured tones, while Great-Aunt Beatrice pointed her finger aggressively in his face, screaming unprovoked insults.

Then came the audio transcript of Victoria’s text messages with her mother, plotted and displayed for the entire gallery to see. The texts explicitly laid out the plan to bait Arthur into a reaction so they could use it in court.

Marcus Vance stood frozen, his legal swagger completely evaporated. He tried to object on grounds of privacy, but Judge Sterling shut him down with a single, icy wave of his hand.

"Mr. Vance, your firm has submitted fraudulent character statements to this court," Judge Sterling said, his voice echoing ominously. "Furthermore, the financial discrepancies involving the minor child's trust fund constitute potential felonies. This court takes perjury and financial manipulation very seriously."

He turned his gaze toward the defense table, where Victoria sat trembling, her immaculate composure shattered beyond recognition.

"Mrs. Hayes," Judge Sterling addressed her directly. "Do you have anything to say in defense of these exhibits?"

Victoria opened her mouth, but no words came out. She looked at her mother, Evelyn, who was glaring at her with cold betrayal for letting their scheme get exposed. Victoria broke down, covering her face with her hands as silent, bitter tears streamed down her cheeks.

"I... I just wanted to keep my daughter," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking.

"By destroying her father and committing fraud?" Judge Sterling asked sternly. He adjusted his glasses, picked up his gavel, and delivered his interim ruling.

"Effective immediately, emergency temporary full physical and legal custody of the minor child, Lily Hayes, is granted solely to the father, Arthur Hayes. Victoria Hayes's visitation rights are suspended pending a court-ordered psychological evaluation and a full forensic audit of the family estate. Furthermore, all assets tied to Lily's trust fund are frozen and transferred to an independent court-appointed receiver."

BANG.

The gavel struck wood, signaling the complete collapse of the Hayes-Evelyn empire.

As the bailiff escorted a weeping Victoria and a furious Evelyn out of the courtroom, Arthur stood tall at the defense table. He exhaled a breath he felt like he had been holding for three years. He had won the first battle. But as he packed his portfolio, a chilling realization hit him: people cornered with nothing left to lose are far more dangerous than people who have everything.

And Victoria’s family was about to prove just how far down they were willing to go.
