Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Flash DriveThe heavy metallic click of the security doors echoed like a gunshot through the ballroom. Dust motes danced in the sudden beams of the emergency strobes, casting harsh, dramatic shadows across the opulent marble floor.

Julian stood at the edge of the open elevator shaft, his back pressed against the cold reinforced concrete. The wind howling up from the dark abyss below whipped his tailored tuxedo collar, fluttering the edges of his pristine white shirt. In his right hand, the black flash drive caught the strobe light, glowing like an omen.
Clara stood frozen a few yards away. Her hands still trembled from where they had torn at her silk dress moments earlier. The fabric hung in jagged, humiliating shreds around her swelling abdomen—a brutal testament to the cruelty of the family she had trusted for three years. Yet, the physical pain vanished, replaced entirely by a hollow, sickening vertigo.
Julian’s eyes weren't filled with fear. They burned with a manic, desperate clarity.
"You think this is about the money, Clara?" Julian’s voice cut through the ambient hum of the security system, laced with a bitter, erratic laugh. "You think my parents wanted your startup capital or your trust funds? They spent three million just to throw this wedding. Why would we risk everything for a few measly millions?"
Security guards closed in, heavy boots thudding in unison.
"Step away from the shaft, Mr. Vance!" the head of security barked, his hand hovering over his baton. "Drop the drive and put your hands behind your head."
Julian didn't look at the guards. His gaze remained locked on Clara, who stood like a statue carved of ice and grief. Her mind raced back through the years: the whirlwind romance, the sudden marriage, the quiet isolation from her friends, and the subtle, insidious way Julian had managed every single asset she owned under the guise of "protecting our future."
"Look at the screen, Clara!" Julian screamed, gesturing frantically toward the giant security monitor overhead. The looping footage of him planting the ring box in the bridal suite was paused, but the monitor suddenly flickered. A new file began to upload automatically from the very flash drive in his hand.
"Don't let him touch it!" Mrs. Vance shrieked from the crowd, her face losing every trace of its aristocratic composure. For the first time all evening, the matriarch’s voice cracked with genuine terror. "Tackle him! Stop him from plugging that in!"
Two guards lunged forward.
Julian didn't flinch. With a wicked, defiant smile, he dropped the flash drive not into the abyss, but straight into Clara’s open, trembling palm as he ducked the guard's grasp.
As his momentum carried him backward, his foot slipped on the slick edge of the shaft.
Thud.
A collective gasp sucked the air right out of the ballroom. Julian hung suspended for a fraction of a second, his fingers clawing at empty air, before plunging backward into the dark void.

Silence descended—heavy, suffocating, and absolute.
Clara looked down at the tiny piece of plastic resting in her hand. The ballroom monitor flickered again, casting a cold blue glow over her face as the first file title loaded on the screen: Project Genesis: Subject 01 - Clara.
