Chapter 2 - Project GenesisThe ballroom crowd parted like the Red Sea as Clara walked slowly toward the main console, clutching the flash drive as though it were a live grenade. The humiliation of her torn dress and the whispers of the wealthy elite faded into a distant hum. Her heart hammered against her ribs, echoing in her ears like a war drum.

She inserted the flash drive into the master control slot.
Instantly, the massive LED screens lining the ballroom walls burst to life. A dark, sterile interface appeared, bearing a corporate logo Clara had never seen before: Vance Biomedical & Behavioral Technologies.
"Turn that off!" Mr. Vance bellowed, lunging forward, but the security guards now surrounded Clara in a protective, defensive circle—their allegiance shifting the moment they realized Julian was gone and the deep state of the Vance family secrets was being dragged into the light.
A video file auto-played. The audio was crisp, chillingly clinical.
It showed a sleek, underground laboratory that looked nothing like the opulent Vance estate. On the examination table lay a younger version of Clara—four years younger, right around the time she had first met Julian at a high-end charity gala. She was fast asleep, hooked up to an array of neurological monitors.
Sitting beside her in the video was Dr. Aris Thorne, a renowned geneticist whose disappearance three years ago had made national headlines.
"Subject 01 exhibits optimal baseline empathy markers," Dr. Thorne’s voice droned from the speakers. "Memory suppression protocols are ready. Once the emotional attachment phase is complete, the neural conditioning will ensure compliance without triggering rejection symptoms."
Clara staggered back, her hand flying to her mouth. Memory suppression?
Another man entered the frame on the screen. It was Julian. But he wasn't looking at Clara with the adoring eyes of a lover. He was looking at her like a technician inspecting a newly delivered piece of hardware.
"Are you sure the synthetic amnesia will hold?" Julian asked in the video. "She’s a brilliant architect. If her spatial reasoning or baseline instincts kick in too early, the company merger will fall through."
"The amnesia is reinforced by emotional trauma loops," Dr. Thorne replied smoothly. "Every time she gets too close to the truth, her mind will naturally suppress the inconsistency. She thinks she fell in love with you organically, Mr. Vance. That is the beauty of Project Genesis. She is a proprietary asset disguised as a wife."

The blood rushed in Clara’s ears. Every memory she had of Julian—their first coffee, the way he comforted her after her parents died, the romantic proposal under the stars—shattered like cheap glass. None of it was real. She had never met Julian by chance at that gala. She had been targeted, abducted, wiped clean, and reprogrammed to fall in love with her jailer.
And now, she was pregnant with a child engineered not by passion, but by a corporate blueprint.
