Chapter 6 - The Trap ClosesDown in the sub-basement, Julian dragged himself along the cold concrete floor, ignoring the white-hot agony in his broken arm. The warning Dr. Thorne had given him echoed relentlessly in his skull.

Self-termination of the compromised asset.

He reached the heavy steel maintenance door that led to the city’s underground utility tunnels. It was locked from the outside. He pounded on it with his fist, coughing violently as the air in the basement suddenly grew heavy, laced with a faint, sweet chemical scent.

"Open the door! Let me out!" Julian screamed, kicking the steel with his good foot.

The security lights flickered, turned a sickly shade of amber, and died. Emergency backup generators hummed to life, casting dim, pulsing strips of light across the corridor.

From the shadows at the end of the hall, a soft click of heels echoed against the concrete.

Julian spun around, pressing his back against the locked door. Out of the darkness stepped Dr. Aris Thorne, flanked by two men in full biohazard gear carrying sleek, medical-grade containment cases.

"Dr. Thorne..." Julian breathed out in relief, lowering his guard for a split second. "Thank God. The facility is compromised—the Feds are upstairs. We need to get out of here before—"

Dr. Thorne didn't smile. He raised a small, pistol-shaped pneumatic injector, his expression as cold as a surgeon’s scalpel.

"You failed your primary function, Julian," Thorne interrupted smoothly. "Subject 01 has regained full cognitive recall. The project is an operational failure. According to corporate bylaws, failed assets must be quarantined and erased."

Julian’s eyes widened in horror. "I gave you the drive! I brought her right to the trap! You can't do this—I'm a Vance!"

"You were a test subject with a manufactured lineage, Julian," Thorne said flatly. "Your parents are board members who lost their actual son in a car accident twenty years ago. We simply replaced him with a clone-engineered proxy to test the multi-generational stability of Project Genesis."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Julian stumbled forward, his hands trembling. "A... a proxy? That's not true. That's a lie!"

"Science doesn't lie, Julian. It merely observes."

Hiss.

The pneumatic injector fired before Julian could lunge. A micro-needle pierced his neck, delivering a concentrated dose of fast-acting paralytic and neural neutralizer. Julian’s knees buckled. As he collapsed onto the cold concrete, his vision blurred into darkness, his final thought a chilling realization: he had been a puppet dancing on strings pulled by the very people he thought he served.
