Chapter 10 - The Breach in the Orchard

Lorenzo was across the room before Vincenzo could blink.
He yanked the study door open. Elena stood at the end of the corridor, her face bloodless, clutching a small, trembling bundle against her chest. Mia’s one-eyed rabbit lay dropped on the Persian rug behind her, its cotton ear torn open.
"They're in the garden," Elena whispered, her voice shaking so violently the words barely formed. "The perimeter sensors... they didn't go off. They bypassed the eastern wall."
Vincenzo stepped out of the study, his expression shifting from amusement to cold calculation. "Looks like you didn't have to wait for them to try, boy. They’re already here."
Lorenzo didn't answer. He didn't look at Vincenzo. He reached out, taking Mia from Elena’s arms—she weighed nothing, just like that first day—and handed her back to the housekeeper with a single, absolute command. "Take her to the reinforced panic room beneath the wine cellar. Do not come out until I unlock the door from the outside. Understand?"
Elena nodded, her eyes wide with terror, and bolted toward the service stairs.
Lorenzo reached inside his coat, pulling out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol—a weapon he hadn't drawn since the night he took control of the northern territories. He checked the magazine with a mechanical click, then whistled twice.
Pino didn't bark. The Doberman appeared from the shadows of the landing like a black ghost, dropping into a low, predatory crouch beside his master's boots.

"Vince," Lorenzo said coldly, not turning around as he walked toward the grand staircase. "If you try to walk out the front gates right now, my men will shoot you for trespassing. If you stay here, stay out of my way."
Vincenzo watched him descend into the dim, marble-pillowed hall below, a grim, respectful smirk touching his lips. "I taught you too well, kid. Let’s see if you remember how to finish a war."
