Chapter 18 - The Unbroken Circle

Two years passed like a single breath of sea air.

The villa by the cliff was no longer just a hideout or a refuge; it was a home. The olive groves produced a rich, golden oil that Elena sold at the local village market, where nobody called her "maid" or "servant," but simply greeted her with warm smiles and baskets of fresh figs.

And Mia had grown. She was five and a half now, with scraped knees, sun-bleached hair, and a pair of small red boots that had long since been replaced twice over, though the old, mud-caked ones still sat proudly on a shelf in her bedroom as a reminder of where she had come from.

On a warm Saturday morning, the village square was alive with the sound of laughter, accordions, and the chatter of the annual harvest festival.

Lorenzo walked through the cobblestone market holding a basket of fresh bread in one hand, while his other hand was firmly wrapped around Mia’s small, warm fingers. Trotting faithfully at their side was Pino, now sporting a silver collar inscribed with a single, simple word: FAMILY.

"Uncle Renz! Can we get gelato? Strawberry!" Mia demanded, tugging excitedly at his sleeve.

"Strawberry first, then we help your mother set up her table," Lorenzo agreed, a soft smile breaking across his weather-tanned face.

As they walked toward the gelateria, an elderly shopkeeper leaning against a doorway tipped his cap. "Buongiorno, Signore Duca."

Lorenzo didn't flinch at the title anymore. It didn't mean fear, blood, or bullets. Here, it just meant a neighbor.

He tipped his head in return, lifted Mia up effortlessly so she could point out her favorite flavor through the glass, and breathed in the sweet scent of sugar, sea salt, and sunlight.
