Chapter 11 - Blood on the Marble

The heavy oak doors of the great hall didn't just open—they exploded inward.
Splintered cedar rained across the polished white floor as three armed men in black tactical gear poured through the threshold, their suppressed automatic rifles sweeping the room with lethal precision. They moved like professional cleaners, trained to sanitize a room before anyone knew the sickness had arrived.
They didn't expect the floor to bite back.
From behind the massive marble pillars flanking the staircase, Lorenzo moved with cold, frictionless economy. A single muffled shot cracked through the vaulted ceiling, and the lead tactical operative dropped instantly, his rifle clattering against the marble.
The remaining two intruders spun around, their sights locking onto Lorenzo’s position. But before their fingers could tighten on the triggers, a 125-pound wall of muscle crashed into the second man’s flank. Pino hit him with the kinetic force of a speeding vehicle, sinking massive jaws into protective Kevlar padding, slamming the intruder hard against the stone wall until his weapon flew from his grip.
Lorenzo stepped out from the pillar, his pistol raised, and put a single round into the third operative’s knee. The man collapsed with a guttural scream, clutching his leg as blood pooled rapidly across the pristine white tiles.
"Who sent you?" Lorenzo asked, stepping over the writhing man, his voice flat, devoid of human warmth.
The operative gritted his teeth, glaring up through a sweat-soaked balaclava. "You... you think Moretti was the only one? The Commission... the Commission wants the estate cleansed. You're a liability, Duca—"
Click.
Lorenzo pressed the cold barrel of his pistol directly against the center of the man's forehead. "Tell the Commission my garden is closed."
Before the man could speak, a sharp, high-pitched beep echoed from the security console near the service entrance.

Lorenzo’s eyes snapped toward the monitor. The infrared feed from the West Pavilion flickered to life.
The back window was shattered. A shadow was climbing inside.
