Chapter 17 - The Final Ledger

The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the Tyrrhenian Sea in broad strokes of bruised purple and liquid gold.

Ranata was gone—escorted off the property by Vincenzo Vance’s men, placed on the first cargo freighter bound for a destination where she would never trouble the Mediterranean again.

Inside the villa, the lamps were lit, casting a warm, amber glow across the stone floors. Elena had put Mia to sleep in her new bedroom—a room with wide wooden shutters that opened directly to the sea breeze and the sound of the waves.

Lorenzo sat alone on the terrace, a cup of black coffee cooling on the iron table before him.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Elena stepped out onto the patio. She was wearing a simple cotton dress, her dark hair falling loosely around her shoulders, carrying a light wool shawl in her hands. She walked over and draped it gently over Lorenzo’s shoulders.

"She's asleep," Elena said softly, leaning against the stone balustrade beside him.

"Good," Lorenzo murmured, reaching up to touch the edge of the shawl. "Was she frightened?"

"No," Elena smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that chased away the last lingering shadows of her past. "She told me today that Mr. Dog is the bravest prince in the world, and that you're the king of the sea."

Lorenzo let out a quiet, self-deprecating breath. "A king of the sea who spends his afternoons pruning lemon trees."

"It’s a good kingdom," Elena said, turning her head to look at him, her dark eyes shining in the candlelight. "Better than the one you left behind."

Lorenzo reached out, his large, calloused hand gently closing over hers. For thirteen years, his hands had held ledgers of blood, triggers of execution, and the cold steel of power. Now, they held something real. Something warm.

"It’s the only one that ever mattered," Lorenzo said.
