Chapter 20 - The Unexpected Ending

Twenty years later, the heavy oak doors of the coastal villa were thrown open once more, not to an assassin or a syndicate boss, but to the bright, blinding glare of a Sicilian summer noon.

A young woman in a crisp white graduation gown walked down the grand stone steps of the terrace, her dark hair catching the sunlight, holding a framed university diploma in one hand and a battered, cotton-stuffed rabbit with a mismatched pink ear in the other.

Waiting at the bottom of the steps was an older man with silver temples and lines carved deep around his eyes, wearing a simple linen shirt. Beside him, a massive, gray-muzzled Doberman lifted its head, letting out a low, contented sigh.

Mia Duca walked up to the man who had picked her up from behind a row of trash cans two decades ago, threw her arms around his neck just as she had when she weighed no more than a folded coat, and whispered the only sentence that had ever truly mattered:

May you like

"You still smell like coffee."

Lorenzo smiled, holding her tight against his heart, knowing at last that the ledger of his life was balanced, and the story had finally found its true beginning.
