Chapter 1 - THE SOUND OF SIRENS AND THE FIRST CRACKThe heavy oak doors of the Howard estate didn't just open; they practically splintered under the coordinated push of Detective Ruiz and three uniformed officers. The chilling wail of police sirens cut through the suffocating silence of the grand foyer, instantly shattering Vanessa’s carefully manufactured masterpiece of tears and innocence.

Vanessa froze, her hand still hovering dramatically over her chest where she had been faking her hyperventilation. Her mascara-stained cheeks twitched as her eyes darted from the imposing figure of Detective Ruiz to the motion-activated security sensors mounted discreetly in the corners of the soaring ceiling.
"Don't move, everyone stay exactly where you are," Detective Ruiz commanded, his voice slicing through the air like a razor. His sharp eyes immediately scanned the scene: Vanessa standing at the top of the grand staircase, trembling in faux distress, and Elena lying motionless on the cold marble floor below, her breathing shallow and calculated.
Mr. Howard, who had rushed out of his study at the sound of the commotion, looked like a man aging ten years in a single second. "Elena! Oh god, Elena!" he cried out, stumbling forward, his knees hitting the hard floor as he cradled his wife's head. "Call an ambulance! Someone call an ambulance right now!"
"It's already on the way, Mr. Howard," Detective Ruiz said, stepping past him without breaking eye contact with Vanessa. He didn't look down at the supposedly unconscious pregnant woman. Instead, he pulled a sleek tablet from his trench coat. "Actually, we didn't need to call 911 from the outside. The emergency dispatch was triggered automatically the second the primary perimeter breach protocol was initiated."
Vanessa’s knees weakened. The color completely drained from her face, leaving her looking like a ghost in designer clothing. Automatic? she thought frantically. That's impossible. I disabled the local master console an hour ago.
"Detective..." Vanessa managed to choke out, her voice pitching up in a desperate, trembling octave. "Thank goodness you're here. It's... it's a horrible accident. She slipped. She was unstable, she tried to attack me, and—and I just tried to defend myself!"
Mr. Howard whipped his head around, his eyes blazing with sudden, terrifying fury as he looked up at Vanessa. "Defend yourself? From my pregnant wife? On these stairs?"
"Mr. Howard," Detective Ruiz interrupted smoothly, holding up the tablet. The screen wasn't showing a 911 dispatch interface. It was playing high-definition, multi-angle audio-video footage with crystal-clear clarity.

On the screen, Vanessa’s face from ten minutes ago was projected for the entire room to see. The audio boomed through the foyer: “If I give her one good push while the family is downstairs, nobody will ever suspect a thing. The money will finally be mine.”
Vanessa let out a sharp, choked gasp. The trap had just slammed shut, but the teeth had only just begun to sink in.
