Chapter 6 - THE TUNNEL OF SECRETSMarcus sprinted down the narrow, dimly lit stone corridor behind the library bookshelf—a hidden architectural relic from the 19th century that connected the main mansion to the old wine cellars and the cliffside escape route. His footsteps echoed frantically against the damp masonry. He reached into his coat, pulling out a master override keycard to unlock the heavy iron exit door at the end of the tunnel.

Just five more seconds, he thought, adrenaline pumping through his veins. If I make it to the boat on the private dock, I'm untouchable.

He swiped the card.

The green light flashed. The heavy mechanical locks began to disengage with a loud, grinding clack.

Marcus pulled the iron handle with all his might—and stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing right outside the open doorway, framed by the bright beam of a police searchlight and blocking the path to the cliffside dock, was Detective Ruiz, flanked by two armed tactical officers.

"End of the line, Marcus," Detective Ruiz said calmly, resting his hand casually on his holster. "You really should have brushed up on the estate's architectural history. Every single nineteenth-century escape tunnel in this county was mapped and digitized by city planning back in two thousand and twenty."

Marcus slowly stepped backward, his hands raised instinctively, realizing he was trapped in a completely inescapable vice. There was no escape dock, no freedom, no stolen empire. Just the cold, uncompromising grip of justice.

Back inside the main study, Elena watched the live tactical feed on her desktop monitor as Marcus was brought out in handcuffs, his head bowed in utter defeat.

Mr. Howard rushed into the room, looking disheveled and frantic, having been woken up by the commotion. "Elena! Elena, what is happening? The police are everywhere! They just arrested Marcus—my God, Marcus of all people!"

Elena turned her chair around, standing up to face her husband. She walked over to him, placing a gentle hand on his arm, her expression softening into genuine warmth.

"It's over, Richard," she said softly. "The house is finally clean."
