Chapter 3 - THE HIDDEN ACCOMPLICE IN THE SHADOWSVanessa was led out through the grand front doors in a blur of flashing police lights and murmuring gossip from the gathering neighborhood crowd. But as the squad car’s red and blue lights painted the walls of the foyer in jagged strokes, Elena didn't feel a sense of ultimate victory.

She felt a chilling draft.
While everyone else was distracted by Vanessa's spectacular public downfall, Elena’s sharp eyes caught a fleeting movement near the service corridor leading to the kitchens. A shadow slipped away into the darkness, moving with the practiced stealth of someone who knew the mansion's blind spots just as well as Elena did.
It wasn't just Vanessa, Elena thought, her heart skipping a beat. Vanessa is arrogant, but she isn't smart enough to bypass the primary server's firewall alone.
Later that night, after the police had cleared the scene, the paramedics had confirmed the baby was completely healthy, and Mr. Howard had finally fallen into an exhausted, grief-stricken sleep upstairs, Elena sat alone in the dim light of the study.
The security monitor glowed softly in front of her. She wasn't looking at the footage of the stairs anymore. She was pulling up the network access logs from thirty minutes before the incident.
Lines of code and IP addresses scrolled across the screen. Most were routine household automation logs, but one specific entry caught her eye—a backdoor login originating from an internal terminal.
Not a guest network. Not Vanessa’s tablet.
The private terminal inside the estate manager’s office.
Elena zoomed in on the log timestamp: 6:42 PM. Exactly four minutes before Vanessa began her monologue on the upper landing, someone had intentionally disabled the upper-floor firewalls to allow Vanessa's phone to connect directly to the main feed, feeding her false confidence that she was operating in secret.
The door behind Elena clicked open.
A soft, familiar voice broke the silence. "You're still awake, my love? The doctor said you need absolute rest after... everything."
Elena didn't turn around immediately. She kept her eyes fixed on the glowing monitor, watching the reflection in the glass.

Standing in the doorway, holding a fresh cup of chamomile tea with a warm, deeply concerned expression, was Marcus, the senior estate manager—and Richard’s most trusted confidant of fifteen years.
"I can't sleep, Marcus," Elena whispered, her voice dangerously calm. "Especially when I realize that the trap Vanessa walked into... was actually built for someone else."
