Chapter 4 - THE WEB TANGLES DEEPERMarcus didn't flinch. He didn't drop the tea. Instead, a slow, microscopic shift occurred in his posture—the tension of a predator realizing the hunt has suddenly reversed roles.

"I beg your pardon, Mrs. Howard?" Marcus asked, his voice remaining smooth, professional, and entirely unbothered. He stepped further into the room, setting the cup down gently on the edge of the mahogany desk. "Are you implying something is wrong with the estate's security protocols?"
Elena turned her chair around slowly, her gaze locking onto him with surgical precision. "Not the protocols, Marcus. The orchestration."
She tapped the keyboard, bringing up the internal IP logs. "Vanessa is a self-absorbed narcissist, but she isn't a systems engineer. She didn't know how to bypass the localized encryption on the north-wing security grid. But you do. You designed it five years ago."
Marcus looked at the screen, then back at Elena. Slowly, the warm, subservient mask melted away, replaced by a cold, calculating intelligence that looked infinitely more dangerous than Vanessa's amateurish malice ever did.
"You're remarkably sharp for someone who just took a ten-foot tumble down a marble staircase," Marcus said softly, his tone losing all traces of deference. He crossed his arms over his chest. "I suppose I should congratulate you. You managed to use Vanessa's pathetic ambitions as a catalyst to expose her and clean house in one fell swoop."
"You helped her," Elena stated, her voice devoid of fear. "Why? What does a trusted manager gain by helping a brat like Vanessa try to push me down the stairs?"
"Vanessa thought she was eliminating a rival for the Howard fortune," Marcus replied, walking casually toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the dark, sprawling gardens. "She thought once you and your unborn child were out of the picture, Richard would be vulnerable, grief-stricken, and easily manipulated into signing over the corporate shares to her."
He turned back to face Elena, a chilling smile playing on his lips. "And once Vanessa did the dirty work, do you know what my next step was, Elena?"
Elena didn't blink. "You had a second set of files ready. Not just Vanessa's confession, but fabricated documents implicating Vanessa and Richard in a conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and corporate embezzlement."

Marcus slowly began to clap, a single, rhythmic sound that echoed in the quiet study. "Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. With Vanessa in prison for attempted murder, and Richard disgraced and imprisoned for financial crimes orchestrated by his own niece, who do you think the sole legal heir to the Howard empire would be under the emergency corporate succession clause?"
He leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "The senior estate manager holding power of attorney over the corporate trust. Me."
