Chapter 7 - The Final Audit

Two weeks later, the Alpine estate was quiet once more.

The autumn leaves had turned brilliant shades of amber and gold, carpeting the sprawling front lawns that swept down toward the iron gates. Inside the nursery, the air smelled of lavender and baby powder. The walls had been completely stripped, re-insulated, and swept three times by independent security sweeps.

Theo, Miles, and Nora were sitting in their plush playpen, giggling and batting at a suspended mobile of wooden stars, completely healed from the trauma of the ultrasonic device.

I stood by the window, watching the afternoon sunlight wash across the hardwood floor, holding a cup of black coffee in my hand.

The door clicked open softly.

Sophie walked into the nursery wearing a new yellow dress—one I had ordered specifically for her from a boutique in Milan—clutching her ugly button-eyed doll under one arm.

She walked right up to Theo’s crib, stood on her tiptoes, and dropped a small, smooth river stone onto the mattress.

“Teddy says the bad noises are gone forever,” she announced simply.

I walked over, kneeling down beside her, resting my forearms on the edge of the wooden crib.

“Is that right?” I asked, a faint smile touching the corners of my mouth—a rare expression that only existed when I was with my children... and my newest protector.

“Uh-huh,” Sophie nodded seriously. “He said the house is happy now.”

I reached out, gently patting her dark curls, just as Elena walked into the nursery carrying a fresh stack of infant blankets.

“Everything alright, Mr. Moretti?” Elena asked softly, pausing by the door.

“Everything is perfect, Elena,” I said, standing up and looking out the window toward the vast, secure perimeter of my empire.

The walls were high. The guards were loyal. The enemies were buried in concrete cells beneath the earth.

But as I looked down at Sophie and my three children laughing in the sunlight, I finally understood something my father had tried to teach me before the world hardened my heart: an empire isn't built on fear and stone. It’s built on the fierce, unyielding love of the people willing to stand in the dark and protect it.

And for the first time in my life, the master of the Alpine estate wasn't afraid of the dark anymore.
