Chapter 17 - The Federal Raid

The grand foyer of the Alpine estate looked like a war zone.

Heavy oak paneling was splintered by ballistic entry rounds, and shards of crystal from the shattered chandelier littered the marble floor like frozen diamonds. Thick plumes of smoke drifted through the vaulted ceilings, smelling of sulfur and tear gas.

Adrien stood at the head of the grand staircase, his hands empty, his fingers laced casually behind his back. Beside him stood Sophia, her posture unyielding, her hand resting over his.

Below them, thirty tactical agents in full black riot gear, bearing DOJ-OSI insignia, fanned out across the marble floor, their carbines raised and laser sights painting red dots across the walls.

At the center of the tactical formation stood a tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate federal suit—Assistant Attorney General Richard Vance, Marcus Vance’s younger brother.

“Adrien Moretti! Sophia Laurent!” Richard Vance’s voice echoed off the vaulted ceiling, dripping with righteous malice. “Drop your weapons and place your hands behind your head! You are in violation of federal statute 44-B, harboring treasonous assets and obstructing justice!”

“You’re a long way from Washington, Richard,” Adrien called out, his voice smooth, carrying an icy mockery that made the federal prosecutor flinch. “Did you drive all the way out to New Jersey just to pick up a lost file?”

“We have a federal warrant to seize all corporate and personal property associated with Aegis Capital and the Laurent estate,” Richard snapped, stepping forward, his eyes burning with vengeance for his disgraced brother. “Hand over the flash drive, Sophia, or we storm the upper levels and tear this house down brick by brick.”

Sophia stepped forward, raising her hand so the small silver titanium drive was clearly visible in her palm.

“You want the truth, Richard?” Sophia called out, her voice ringing clear and steady through the smoky foyer. “Here it is. Everything your brother tried to hide for a decade. Every corrupt judge, every illicit wire transfer, every federal cover-up.”

Richard’s eyes locked onto the drive, a greedy, triumphant smile spreading across his face. “Hand it down. Now.”

“Catch,” Sophia said coldly.

With a swift, fluid motion, she tossed the flash drive through the air. It arced gracefully over the grand staircase and landed squarely in Richard Vance’s outstretched palm.

Richard looked down at the silver metal in his hand, laughing triumphantly. “Fools. You just handed over your only leverage.”

“No, Richard,” Adrien smiled, a dark, dangerous expression that sent a chill down every federal agent's spine. “We just handed you a grenade with the pin already pulled.”

Before Richard could process the warning, the small LED status light on the flash drive shifted from green to a pulsing, brilliant crimson.

A high-pitched digital chime echoed from Richard’s pocket as his encrypted DOJ tactical tablet buzzed violently. He pulled it out, staring at the screen in absolute horror.

“Master decryption protocol engaged. Uplink active. Streaming 450 gigabytes of classified federal corruption data to public servers worldwide. Broadcast complete in 10... 9... 8...”
