Chapter 20 - The Horizon Beckons

Two weeks later.
The white-washed cottage in St. Augustine, Florida, welcomed us back like an old friend.
The salt air carried the scent of roasting seafood and blooming jasmine. The front porch swing creaked gently in the afternoon breeze. There were no armed guards in the bushes, no encrypted satellite phones buzzing in the dark, and no federal warrants waiting in the mailbox.
Just the sound of the Atlantic waves crashing against the shore, and the joyful screams of Oliver and Emma chasing a golden retriever across the warm, sandy beach.
I stood on the wooden deck of the porch, holding a warm cup of coffee, watching Adrien chase our children down toward the surf. He wasn't wearing a tailored Italian suit or a tactical vest. He wore a faded linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up, laughing openly as Emma scooped up a handful of wet sand and tossed it directly at his shoes.
He looked up, catching my eye across the lawn.
He didn't walk—he ran.
Crossing the grass in long, effortless strides, Adrien swept me up into his arms the second he reached the porch, spinning me around as a breathless, joyful laugh escaped my lips. He set me down slowly, keeping his hands locked securely around my waist, his gray-green eyes shining with a peace we both thought was impossible to find.
“What are you smiling at, Dr. Moretti?” Adrien asked, his thumb gently tracing my cheekbone.
May you like
“Just thinking,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down until our lips met in a long, unhurried kiss that tasted of salt air, forgiveness, and forever. “We finally made it home, Daddy.”
Adrian smiled, resting his forehead against mine as the sun dipped below the Atlantic horizon, bathing our family in the golden glow of a brand-new day where the shadows could never reach us again.
