Chapter 27 - The European Trap

“A trap?” I echoed, sitting up straight. “Adrian, what are you talking about?”

“When I stepped down from the Moretti syndicate, I didn't just hand over the keys to a vacuum,” Adrian explained, pulling a secure satellite tablet from his tactical pack and tapping the screen to bring up an encrypted financial ledger. “I left a dormant, fail-safe protocol embedded in every offshore account and shipping corridor we ever controlled. A digital landmine.”

“The European council thinks they can carve up our old territory,” Adrian continued, a dark, brilliant smile touching the corners of his mouth. “When they consolidate their assets into the central Swiss trust next week to fund their expansion into America, that protocol triggers automatically. Every single account freezes. Every maritime route gets flagged for international seizure. In seventy-two hours, the entire European syndicate network will be bankrupt, locked out, and dismantled by Interpol without a single shot being fired.”

I stared at him in stunned silence. The sheer, ruthless brilliance of his plan took my breath away.

“You planned this years ago?”

“Insurance,” Adrian corrected simply. “A man in my position doesn't survive thirty-four years in the underworld by trusting promises. I trusted mathematics.”

“And Madame Cartier?”

“She delivered the message directly to us because she wanted to see if I still had the stomach for a fight,” Adrian said, standing up and walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the snow-covered valley. “She thought she was warning the wolf. She didn't realize she was walking into the den.”

Before I could answer, the secure satellite phone on the timber table chimed with a sharp, high-pitched ping.

Mateo strode into the room from the comms alcove, his face pale, holding a decrypted printout in his hand.

“Boss,” Mateo said, his voice tense. “We just intercepted an encrypted broadcast from Zurich. The European council... they didn't just mobilize mercenary units to Florida. They’ve traced our extraction to Montana.”

Adrian turned away from the window, his expression instantly hardening into stone. “How many?”

“Not a strike team, boss,” Mateo swallowed hard. “An armada of private corporate jets. And leading them isn't a mercenary captain... it’s Madame Cartier herself.”
