Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Flash Drive

The heavy thud of the security guard tackling the husband against the concrete pillar of the open elevator shaft echoed off the marble walls of the grand ballroom. The red LED light on the flash drive blinked in the dim emergency lighting—a mocking, rhythmic pulse that seemed to mock every single person in the room.
Elena stood frozen at the center of the shattered remains of her dignity. Her silk dress was torn at the shoulder, revealing the stark contrast of her bruised skin and the gentle swell of her six-month pregnant belly. Only moments ago, she had been the target of venomous jeers, spit-filled accusations, and the triumphant smirk of her mother-in-law, Beatrice. Now, the silence in the ballroom was absolute, suffocating, and heavy with a dread that transcended the stolen diamond ring.
"Let go of me!" Julian snarled, his face twisted in a mask of desperation as two security officers pinned his arms behind his back. The flash drive slipped from his fingers, clattering against the edge of the open shaft before bouncing onto the polished floor.
Elena didn't look at the flash drive. Her eyes remained locked on the man she had loved, trusted, and married just eighteen months ago. The man who had watched silently while his family ripped her clothes. The man who had orchestrated her public execution.
"Julian," Elena's voice was a chilling whisper, devoid of the tears that had stained her cheeks minutes before. "Pick it up."
"Elena, listen to me," Julian gasped, his eyes darting frantically toward the security guards. "You don't understand what my family is doing. They forced me—"

"Don't you dare," Beatrice hissed, stepping forward with her diamond-encrusted cane clicking sharply against the floor. Her face had lost its color, replaced by a cold, venomous panic. "He's lying, Elena! The boy has lost his mind under the pressure of your gold-digging manipulation. Guards, throw him into the security hold and destroy that drive!"
"Shut up, Mother!" Julian screamed back, his voice cracking with hysteria. He wrenched his shoulder free for a fraction of a second, lunging toward the flash drive. "If I'm going down, we are all burning to the ground!"
