Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The ballroom speakers crackled to life, filling the cavernous space with the crisp, unmistakable audio of a private boardroom meeting dated four months ago.

“She’s pregnant now. If we don’t move fast, the child will legally inherit half of the holdings when Arthur’s trust fund matures next year,” Beatrice’s voice echoed clearly through the surround-sound system.

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Beatrice froze, her face draining of all blood.

“I told you, Mother, we need her signature voluntarily,” Julian’s recorded voice replied. “If she dies under suspicious circumstances, the forensic audit will trigger automatically. We need a scandal. Something so humiliating, so devastating, that she signs away her power of attorney just to escape the shame and protect her child.”

“And the ring?” a third voice asked—the bridesmaid, Sarah, who was currently sobbing hysterically in the corner.

“Sarah plays her part, plants the box, and we break her spirit in front of high society,” Julian’s voice concluded with chilling indifference. “Once she’s broken, I’ll take her upstairs, hand her the pre-prepared asset transfer papers, and tell her it’s the only way to save her reputation. She’ll sign anything.”

The audio cut out. The silence that followed was heavier than physical weight.

Elena stood motionless, staring at the screen as a new file loaded automatically: [PROJECT_PHOENIX_ACQUISITION.PDF]. It was a detailed, meticulously planned corporate coup. Not only did Julian and Beatrice plan to steal her fortune, but they had also systematically drained her late father’s accounts, funneling millions into offshore shell companies.

And right at the bottom of the document was a secondary folder labeled: [MEDICAL_RECORDS_CONFIDENTIAL].

Elena clicked it.

A scan of a prescription appeared on the screen. It was issued to Julian Vance, dated six weeks ago. The medication listed was a potent, slow-acting endocrine disruptor—known to cause severe hormonal fluctuations, extreme fatigue, and in pregnant women, targeted fetal distress.

Elena’s hand instinctively flew to her lower abdomen. Her breath hitched.

"Julian..." Elena whispered, her voice cracking as the full horror of the betrayal crashed over her like a tidal wave. "The prenatal vitamins... the ones you insisted on bringing me every single morning... you were poisoning me."
