Chapter 8 - THE TWIST IN THE DARKNESS (THE END)

For the first time since the restaurant, Andrew looked at Vanessa with something approaching respect—and then, he began to laugh.
It wasn't a bitter laugh. It was a dark, amused chuckle that made the hairs on Vanessa’s arms stand up.
"Brilliant," Andrew whispered, stepping toward the window as the sound of sirens grew louder below. "Truly brilliant, Vanessa. You finally showed some teeth."
"It’s over, Andrew," she said, her voice trembling despite her victory. "The police are downstairs. You’re going to prison."
Andrew reached into his pocket. Vanessa flinched, but he didn't pull out a weapon. He pulled out a small black remote control and pressed a button.
The heavy steel security shutters of the office began to slam down, sealing the entire floor from the outside world.
"What are you doing?!" Vanessa panicked, running toward the doors.
"Did you really think the FIB received those files, Vanessa?" Andrew asked, turning around with a calm smile. "Who do you think owns the servers you uploaded them to? Vance Communications handles ninety percent of the state’s digital infrastructure."
Vanessa’s phone buzzed in her hand. A notification popped up: UPLOAD FAILED. DESTINATION UNREACHABLE.
Her blood ran cold. "No..."
"I leaked those passwords to you three weeks ago," Andrew revealed, walking slowly toward her as the room became completely sealed off. "I needed you to commit a federal cyber-crime against my corporation so I could legally strip you of every right you have left."
The heavy doors clicked shut.
"You thought you were playing chess, Vanessa," Andrew whispered, stopping right in front of her, holding up a new document. "Now, sign the confession for corporate espionage, or spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
Vanessa looked at the paper, then at Andrew’s cold, unyielding eyes. She realized the ultimate horror: there was never a moment where she was in control. Every rebellion, every move, every breath she took had been written into his script from the very beginning.
