Chapter 1 - THE GHOST RETURNS TO THE CHICAGO SKYLINEThe helicopter touched down on the private helipad atop the Moretti Grand Hotel just as the Chicago sun began to melt into Lake Michigan, staining the horizon the color of fresh blood.

I adjusted the collar of my bespoke charcoal coat, the heavy fabric wrapping securely around my frame. Eight weeks had passed since that cold morning in the hospital bed. Eight weeks of sleepless nights, silent training sessions in a secluded cabin in Wisconsin, and legal maneuvering so precise it would have made a Swiss watchmaker weep.
In my arms, wrapped in a blanket of the finest silk and cashmere, slept little Elena.
She had Adrian’s dark, sweeping eyelashes and the unmistakable contour of his jawline—traits that would eventually make denying her paternity an absolute impossibility for him. But for now, she was my secret weapon.
"Are you ready, ma'am?"
Marcus, a former federal agent who had traded his badge for the formidable retainer I offered him, held the cabin door open. His eyes scanned the perimeter of the rooftop, noting every security camera, every armed guard in an Armani suit, and every exit point.
"As ready as I'll ever be, Marcus," I replied, my voice steady, betraying none of the adrenaline surging through my veins. "Is the wire secure?"
"Encrypted and streaming live to three independent federal servers and two major international investigative news desks," Marcus said, tapping his lapel discreetly. "The moment you give the signal, or if your heart rate spikes past a critical threshold, the entire archive drops worldwide."
"Good."
I stepped out onto the concrete helipad. The wind whipped my hair across my face, carrying the scent of autumn and impending chaos.

Downstairs, in the grand ballroom of the Moretti Grand, hundreds of Chicago’s elite—politicians, judges, corporate titans, and ruthless capos from the five families—were raising crystal flutes of champagne to toast Adrian Moretti and his new bride, Valentina. They believed they were celebrating an unbreakable dynasty.
They had no idea they were standing on an active volcano.
