Chapter 1 - THE INVITATION TO AN EMPIRE'S COLLAPSEThe hospital room smelled of antiseptic, newborn skin, and quiet triumph. My daughter, Lily Carter, rose and fell with a soft, steady rhythm against my chest. Every fiber of my being wanted to stay wrapped in this fragile bubble of peace, but the cold, harsh light of dawn had brought Adrian Brooks’s voice back into my life, dragging a storm behind it.

"Send me the address," I had told him.

Now, staring at the screen of my phone, the digital ink glowed like a countdown timer.

The Grand Azure Ballroom, Chicago. Date: Saturday, 6:00 PM. Hosted by: Adrian Brooks & Celeste Vance.

Below the venue details, a glossy promotional banner caught my eye. Sponsored by Vance Global Holdings.

I zoomed in on the corporate logo, my breath catching in my throat. Vance Global was a shell company. I knew that because months ago, while tearing through our joint financial records in the dead of night, I had traced the mysterious drainage of my grandmother’s multi-million-dollar inheritance straight to an offshore account registered under that exact name. At the time, Adrian had sworn up and down that it was a "bad real estate investment," looking at me with those practiced, pitying eyes that always made me feel like I was losing my mind.

"You're hysterical, Mia," he had said back then, holding a cup of chamomile tea he expected me to drink like a good, obedient wife. "You're stressed because your body can't do the one thing it's built for, and now you're imagining conspiracies in our portfolio."

I wasn't hysterical. I was just blind.

Celeste hadn't just been warming his bed while I sat in sterile fertility clinics begging my uterus to hold a life; she had been his partner in corporate embezzlement. They had siphoned my inheritance, built a life on my blood and tears, and now they were throwing a lavish, black-tie celebration to cement their victory.

They wanted a spectacle. They wanted to humiliate the "barren ex-wife" in front of the entire Chicago elite.

Little did they know, I wasn't coming as a heartbroken victim. I was coming as the executioner.

I dialed a private number I hadn't used since the day I fled Chicago. It rang twice before a crisp, professional voice answered.

"Marcus Sterling."

"Marcus," I said, my voice dropping an octave, steady and sharp as a scalpel. "It's time."

A heavy silence hummed over the line, followed by the sound of rustling paper. When Marcus spoke again, all the corporate polish in his tone had vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory thrill.

"Mia? Good God, woman, your mother said you vanished off the face of the earth. Are you safe? Where—"

"I had the baby, Marcus. She’s sleeping right beside me." A pause on the line. I didn't give him time to process. "And Adrian just invited me to his wedding."

A sharp intake of breath. "The bastard has a death wish. What do you need?"

"I need you to book a private jet to Chicago for Saturday afternoon. I need a legal team specializing in white-collar crime standing by at the venue doors. And Marcus?"

"Name it."

"Make sure the IRS tax fraud division liaison we spoke to last year has a front-row seat. Adrian wanted a crowd for his big day. Let's make sure he gets an audience he'll never forget."
