Chapter 5 - THE CRACKING FAÇADE"You had my child?" Adrian whispered, his voice trembling as the sheer magnitude of what he had thrown away finally crashed down upon him. His hands hovered in the air, clawing at empty space as if trying to reach for a ghost. "Mia... where is she? Where is my daughter?"

"She has a name, Adrian," I replied coldly, stepping back to create a wall of space between us. "Her name is Lily. And she has a mother who loves her, and a birth certificate that lists her father as unknown—because a man who steals from his wife and calls her broken doesn't deserve to share her blood."
Celeste shrieked, pushing past Adrian with a manic fury, her designer gown tearing slightly as she shoved him aside. "You bitch! You planned this! You trapped him!"
"Trapped him?" I laughed, a sharp, humorless sound that echoed off the crystal chandeliers. "Celeste, darling, you spent two years sleeping with a married man, stealing my grandmother's money, and orchestrating a hostile takeover of my life. I didn't trap him. I simply gave him enough rope to hang you both."
Before Celeste could lunge at me, one of the IRS agents stepped smoothly into her path, flashing a heavy gold badge.
"Celeste Vance, you are under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny," the agent recited, his voice completely devoid of emotion as he pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
The click of the handcuffs locking around Celeste’s wrists sounded like a gunshot in the grand ballroom.
Celeste screamed, thrashing against the federal agent, her pristine ivory veil slipping from her hair and dragging across the spilled red wine on the marble floor. "Adrian! Do something! Call your lawyers! Don't just stand there looking like an idiot!"
Adrian didn't move. He stood knee-deep in the wreckage of his own wedding reception, his eyes glazed over, staring vacantly at the projection screen that continuously looped the proof of his financial ruin.
His mother, Eleanor, had collapsed into her chair, her face buried in her trembling hands as prominent business associates and high-society friends hurriedly grabbed their coats, desperate to distance themselves from the sinking ship of the Brooks family name.
"Mr. Adrian Brooks," the second federal agent said, stepping up to my former husband with a matching set of cuffs. "You are also under arrest for federal tax evasion, corporate embezzlement, and securities fraud."
Adrian didn't fight. As the cold metal clamped around his wrists, his eyes met mine one last time. There was no arrogance left in them—only a hollow, terrified realization of the monster he had underestimated.
"Mia..." he choked out, his voice breaking. "Please... we were married... we loved each other once..."
"We were," I said softly, turning my back on him as the federal agents led him away in handcuffs. "Until you decided that my worth was measured by my fertility, and my bank account was yours for the taking."
Marcus stepped up beside me, handing me my designer trench coat. "Car is waiting outside, boss. Private jet is prepped for New York. How are you holding up?"

I slipped my arms into the coat, feeling the residual warmth of my newborn daughter waiting for me in the secure nursery back at the hospital. A profound, unbreakable peace settled over my chest.
"Never better, Marcus," I smiled, walking out of the ballroom as the glittering wreckage of Adrian's empire crumbled behind us. "Never better."
