Chapter 4 - THE MATRIX OF LIES"That's impossible," stammered Richard Vance, Celeste’s uncle and a major board member of Adrian’s primary tech investor firm. He stood up from his table, his face purple with fury. "Vance Global is a legitimate enterprise! Adrian, tell these clowns they're out of their minds!"

Adrian didn't speak. He couldn't. He was staring at the projection screen as if looking at his own executioner's axe. His eyes darted from the wire transfer receipts to Marcus, and finally to me, searching desperately for any sign of bluff, any crack in my armor.

There was none.

"It’s not impossible, Richard," Marcus said calmly, stepping forward with a remote clicker in hand. He clicked to the next slide.

A series of text messages and scanned email threads filled the screen. The sender's name was clearly visible: Celeste Vance. The recipient: Adrian Brooks.

Celeste (11:42 PM): The transfer from the Carter trust cleared the Cayman account. Once the divorce papers are signed and she takes the blame for the 'failed marriage,' she'll never have the mental bandwidth to audit the corporate books. We’re sitting on a goldmine, babe.

Adrian (11:45 PM): Just make sure her signature on the asset waiver looks clean. My mother’s lawyer drafted it, but I don't want any loose ends. Once we strip the inheritance, we expand the tech firm and leave her with nothing.

The ballroom went dead silent. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning units overhead.

Eleanor Brooks clutched her chest, her aristocratic composure shattering completely. She turned her wide, horrified eyes toward her son. "Adrian... tell me that's not true. Tell me you didn't steal from your own family... from that poor girl..."

"Mom, don't listen to them!" Adrian finally found his voice, though it sounded cracked and desperate, like dry twigs snapping underfoot. He lunged toward the projector, as if physically smashing the screen could erase the digital truth. "It's photoshopped! Mia hacked my old laptop! She’s a vindictive, unstable liar who—"

"I'm unstable?" I interrupted, my voice slicing through his panic.

I took two slow steps toward him, my heels clicking against the stage. I looked him dead in the eye, the man I had loved, the man who had held my hand through two miscarriages only to whisper in my ear that my broken body was a curse on our marriage.

"Adrian, you told everyone I was barren," I whispered, loud enough for the front microphones to pick up every syllable. "You told your mother I was an empty vessel. You told your mistress that I was too weak to ever fight back."

Celeste was hyperventilating now, clutching her stomach as her fake tears turned into genuine panic. "Get her out of here! She’s ruining our wedding! Adrian, do something!"

"I am doing something, Celeste," I said, turning my gaze to her with a predatory smile. "I'm giving you the wedding gift you deserve."

Marcus clicked the remote one last time.

The screen shifted from the financial crimes to a clean, highly official medical document bearing the seal of Chicago General Hospital, complete with a state-certified notary stamp.

"Exhibit B," Marcus announced clearly. "A court-certified paternity and birth record."

Adrian froze mid-step. His eyes locked onto the screen.

Child: Carter, Lily M. Date of Birth: August 12, 2026. Father: Brooks, Adrian. DNA Match Probability: 99.999%.

The silence in the ballroom broke instantly, replaced by a deafening roar of overlapping gasps and shouted questions.

Adrian stumbled backward, his knees hitting the edge of the sweetheart table. Wine glasses wobbled and shattered against the floor, staining his pristine Brioni suit with dark, blood-red splashes.

"No," Adrian breathed, shaking his head frantically. "No... that's impossible. You... you were infertile! You couldn't—"

"I wasn't infertile, Adrian," I said, stepping right up to him, my voice dropping to a harsh, cold whisper that only he could hear. "My body just knew the toxic environment it was living in. The moment I signed those divorce papers and walked out of your toxic life, my stress levels dropped—and my baby finally found a safe home to grow."
