Chapter 6 - THE ASHES OF AN EMPIREThe fallout of the Grand Azure wedding was swift, brutal, and absolute.

Within forty-eight hours, the story dominated every major news outlet and financial blog in the country. Headlines screamed across digital screens: TECH TYCOON ARRESTED AT WEDDING BY EX-WIFE AND IRS! and THE MILLION-DOLLAR HEIST: HOW ADRIAN BROOKS STOLE FROM HIS INFERTILE WIFE ONLY TO LOSE EVERYTHING!
Social media tore the newlyweds apart. Memes of Celeste in her wine-stained Vera Wang gown handcuffs-bound flooded X and Instagram. Vance Global Holdings collapsed before the stock market even opened on Monday morning, its assets immediately frozen by federal judges upon Marcus Sterling’s motion.
I sat in the penthouse apartment I had purchased independently, far away from the sprawling suburban mausoleum Adrian and I had shared. Sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling windows, warming the hardwood nursery where little Lily lay sleeping in a bassinet crafted from sustainable birch wood.
My phone buzzed relentlessly on the marble coffee table. Unknown numbers, reporters, old college friends crawling out of the woodwork, and frantic voice messages from Eleanor Brooks, crying, begging for a moment of my time, pleading for family solidarity.
I didn't answer a single one.
The doorbell chimed softly.
I walked down the hallway, opening the heavy oak door to find Marcus Sterling standing there, holding a thick stack of legal briefs and a steaming cup of artisan coffee.
"Morning, boss," Marcus greeted with a tired but victorious grin. "Thought you might want a rundown before the media circus starts camping outside the lobby."
"Come in, Marcus," I stepped aside, gesturing for him to take a seat in the minimalist living room. "Quiet voices, please. Lily just fell asleep after a long feeding."
Marcus lowered his voice immediately, stepping gingerly across the rug. He dropped the heavy file folder onto the glass table. "You wouldn't believe what we found when we unlocked Adrian's primary corporate server over the weekend. It goes way deeper than just your grandmother's inheritance."
I poured myself a cup of tea, sitting opposite him. "Keep going."
"Adrian wasn't just skimming from your trust fund," Marcus said, flipping open the file to reveal a complex web of shell companies spanning the British Virgin Islands and Zurich. "He was running a Ponzi scheme with several major venture capital firms in Chicago. The wedding? He used investor funds to pay for that entire lavish spectacle. He was trying to fake stability because the SEC had already flagged his personal accounts two months ago."
I sipped my tea, watching the steam curl into the air. "So the wedding wasn't just a celebration. It was a desperate PR stunt."
"Exactly," Marcus nodded. "And when he invited you, he genuinely thought you were still the broken, submissive woman he left behind. He wanted you in the audience to rub your face in his 'success' so he could feel powerful after months of financial panic."
"He underestimated what a mother will do to protect her child," I said quietly, touching the delicate gold chain around my neck—a gift from my grandmother, the very woman whose wealth had just acted as the ultimate trap.

"Well, his miscalculation is going to cost him at least fifteen years in a federal penitentiary," Marcus said, closing the folder with a satisfying thud. "As for Celeste, her defense attorneys are already trying to cut a plea deal, throwing Adrian completely under the bus. She’s claiming he forced her into the embezzlement."
"Let them tear each other apart," I replied, my voice steady. "I don't care about their blame game. Every single asset they stole has been legally frozen and redirected back to the Carter Foundation. Vance Global is liquidating tomorrow."
