Chapter 8 - THE COURTROOM SHOWDOWNThe courtroom of the Cook County Domestic Relations Division was stuffy, smelling of old paper, floor wax, and quiet desperation.

When I walked in, flanked by Marcus Sterling and a junior associate carrying three heavy crates of legal documentation, the gallery fell silent. Photographers weren't allowed inside, but digital journalists crowded the hallway outside, eager for the next chapter of the Brooks scandal.

Adrian sat at the defense table, flanked by his public defender.

He looked unrecognizable. The bespoke Brioni tuxedo was gone, replaced scratchy, orange-brown detention center jumpsuit that hung loosely over his frame. His hair was uncombed, graying rapidly around the temples, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. The billionaire swagger had been completely beaten out of him.

When he saw me walk through those doors, his head snapped up. For a split second, a flicker of desperate hope crossed his features—the pathetic delusion that maybe, just maybe, the woman who had once loved him would show mercy.

I didn't look at him. I walked straight to the plaintiff's table, sat down with absolute poise, and opened my leather portfolio.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance," the bailiff droned. (A different Vance, thankfully, and completely unrelated to the disgraced corporate family).

Judge Vance adjusted her spectacles, looking down at the massive stack of files before her. "We have an emergency custody and paternity petition filed by Mr. Adrian Brooks against Ms. Mia Carter. Mr. Brooks, you may speak."

Adrian’s public defender gently nudged his client. Adrian stood up, his chains clinking softly against the linoleum floor. He swallowed hard, his voice raspy and broken.

"Your Honor," Adrian began, his eyes darting toward me before locking onto the judge. "I made terrible mistakes in business. I accept full responsibility for my corporate failures. But... but I am a father. When I found out I had a daughter—little Lily—something broke inside me. I want a chance to be in her life. I don't want to lose my child the way I lost everything else. Please... give me a chance to prove I can be a father."

It was a masterclass in emotional manipulation. If I hadn't lived through his cruelty, if I hadn't watched him laugh while calling me barren, I might have almost felt a flicker of pity.

Almost.

Judge Vance listened impassively, her expression stone-cold. She turned her gaze to Marcus. "Counsel for the respondent?"

Marcus stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. He simply let the facts speak for themselves.

"Your Honor, we object to Mr. Brooks's petition on every conceivable legal and moral ground," Marcus began, stepping forward and clicking a remote to activate the courtroom's digital display.

The screen lit up with certified copies of Adrian's federal indictment, followed by the text messages where he and Celeste plotted to steal my inheritance, and finally, the medical records detailing the extreme emotional abuse and gaslighting I had endured during our marriage—including his medical coercion and repeated verbal degradation regarding my fertility.

"Mr. Brooks is not seeking custody out of parental affection," Marcus stated coldly, pointing to the screen. "He is seeking a legal anchor to mitigate his federal prison sentence and manipulate public optics. Furthermore, a man facing twenty-five years in a maximum-security penitentiary for grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy cannot provide a stable, safe environment for an infant."

Judge Vance reviewed the documents, her face darkening with every page. She looked over her glasses at Adrian, her voice cutting like a razor.

"Mr. Brooks," the judge said coldly. "You spent years convincing your wife that her body was broken, while simultaneously looting her family's trust fund to finance an illicit affair and a luxury lifestyle. Now, standing before this court in a federal jumpsuit, you have the audacity to demand parental rights to a child you didn't even know existed until your crimes caught up with you?"

Adrian opened his mouth, but no words came out. His hands shook against the edge of the defense table.

"Petition denied with prejudice," Judge Vance banged her gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack. "Mr. Brooks is hereby stripped of all paternal and legal recognition regarding the child Lily Carter. Any further attempts to harass the respondent will result in immediate contempt charges and extended prison time."

The gavel strike felt like the final nail in the coffin of Adrian’s old life.

As the bailiff grabbed his shoulders to escort him back to the holding cell, Adrian cast one final, broken glance in my direction.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply looked at him with complete, utter indifference—the ultimate punishment for a narcissist who had believed he was the center of the universe.
