Chapter 1 - The Doctor's Verdict and the First Crack

The hum of the ultrasound machine felt deafening in the sterile silence of the clinic. Dr. Harris adjusted his glasses, his professional veneer masking a profound awkwardness.
David leaned forward, his hands gripping the edges of the medical table until his knuckles turned white. "Well, Doctor? Is it a boy or what? Don't keep us in suspense."
"David, please, let the doctor speak," Allison cooed, resting a manicured hand over her slightly rounded stomach, playing the picture of the blushing, triumphant mistress.
Dr. Harris sighed, turning the monitor slightly away so they couldn't scrutinize the grayscale blurs, though the truth was already painfully obvious to a trained eye. He looked from David, to Megan, and finally to David’s mother, Eleanor, whose face had gone rigid with sudden apprehension.
"Mr. Sterling," Dr. Harris began, his voice measured and devoid of the enthusiastic warmth he usually reserved for wealthy clientele. "I’ve reviewed Miss Vance’s current hormone panels, the sonogram measurements, and her previous milestone records from our sister facility."
"And?" David barked, his impatience flaring. "What does that have to do with my son?"
"Everything," Dr. Harris replied softly. "Because according to the biological timeline, the gestational age of this fetus is exactly ten weeks and four days."
Allison’s breath hitched. A micro-expression of absolute panic flickered across her carefully made-up face.
David frowned, struggling to do the math. "Ten weeks? Wait. We’ve been together exclusively for... let me see. That lines up perfectly. We started seeing each other..." His voice trailed off as he noticed his mother’s sharp gasp.
Eleanor Sterling, a woman whose life revolved around bloodlines, pedigree, and social standing, stared directly at Allison. "Ten weeks, David? Let's check the calendar. Today is October fourteenth. Ten weeks ago would put conception right around August fifth."
Allison’s face drained of color. "Eleanor, what are you implying? Of course it's David's! Why would you even—"
"Quiet, girl," Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic composure shattering into jagged shards of fury. She turned to Dr. Harris. "Doctor, what is the exact margin of error on this dating scan?"
"With modern ultrasound technology and first-trimester screening," Dr. Harris said calmly, looking straight into David’s widening eyes, "the margin of error is less than forty-eight hours. Furthermore, Mr. Sterling... I notice there are no genetic screening results in this file from you. But standard blood work indicates a genetic chromosomal profile that..." He paused, swallowing hard. "To put it bluntly, the DNA markers of this fetus do not match the paternal lineage you provided, nor is it biologically possible for you to be the father."
The room spun.
David stumbled back, his shoulder crashing into a supply cart and sending a tray of surgical instruments clattering to the floor. "What did you just say? Are you out of your mind? Sue you—I’ll ruin this clinic! Allison is carrying my son!"
Allison burst into theatrical tears, grabbing for David’s arm. "David! Don't listen to him! He's incompetent! He must have mixed up the files! Look at me, would I lie to you? I gave up everything for you!"
Megan stepped forward, her eyes darting between Allison’s trembling frame and Dr. Harris’s unblinking gaze. "Doctor, are you absolutely certain? Do you know who my family is? The Sterlings don't make mistakes, and we certainly don't get played."
Dr. Harris didn't flinch. He slid a printed summary sheet across the desk. "I am entirely certain. Furthermore, Miss Vance’s medical history shows she was treated at a downtown fertility and wellness center on that exact weekend in August—a weekend, Mr. Sterling, if you recall your own calendar, when you were in Zurich closing the Meridian acquisition."
David froze.
Zurich. He had been out of the country for six full days.
May you like
And Allison... Allison had stayed behind, claiming she needed a "spa weekend" to deal with the stress of their affair.
The silence that followed was absolute, heavy, and lethal. The grand legacy David had burned his entire life to build—destroying his marriage, discarding his daughters, and handing over his assets—had just evaporated into a vapor of lies.
