Chapter 3 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

Back at the clinic, the sterile examination room felt like a chamber of execution.

David’s face had turned a terrifying shade of purple. The veins in his neck bulged as he stared at Allison, who was now huddled in a corner, sobbing hysterically and muttering incoherent excuses.

"You lying, manipulative bitch!" David roared, lunging forward.

Dr. Harris quickly stepped between them, pressing the emergency security button under his desk. "Mr. Sterling, I must ask you to calm down or I will have security remove you from the premises immediately."

Eleanor gripped her designer handbag like a weapon, her face twisted in utter horror. "David! Stop this instant! Stop making a scene in public! Do you realize what this means? If this child isn't yours—if there is no male heir—the board of directors... the trust fund... your grandfather’s will!"

She didn't need to finish.

The terms of old man Sterling’s ironclad trust were legendary in high-society legal circles: The primary operating shares and the executive chairmanship of Sterling Global shall pass exclusively to the first direct male heir born of a legitimate marriage. In the event of divorce or failure to produce a legitimate male heir within five years, the entire estate—every building, every stock portfolio, every cent—reverts to an anonymous principal stakeholder holding the primary debt leverage.

For years, David had assumed that stakeholder was a faceless institutional bank. He had gloated about it at cocktail parties, bragging about how clever he was to leverage corporate debt to buy up luxury assets while keeping his personal liability low.

What he never knew—what none of them knew—was that the anonymous principal stakeholder, operating through a labyrinth of shell companies, was Catherine.

And as if on cue, the heavy mahogany doors of the clinic's private consultation suite swung open.

A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit walked in, flanked by two private security guards. It was Marcus Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Legal, though most people simply called him the corporate grim reaper.

"Mr. David Sterling," Marcus said, his voice echoing off the tile walls with clinical precision.

David whipped around, panting, sweat beading on his forehead. "Marcus? What the hell are you doing here? Get these thugs out of my way! Allison cheated on me, the baby isn't mine, I have a crisis—"

"Your crisis is significantly larger than you realize, David," Marcus interrupted, opening a sleek leather briefcase and pulling out a thick stack of embossed legal documents.

"What is that?" Megan demanded, stepping forward defensively. "Who do you think you are barging in here? We are the Sterlings!"

"And as of three minutes ago," Marcus replied smoothly, "the Sterlings are officially broke."

He held up a single sheet of paper stamped with a red corporate seal.

"At exactly 10:03 AM this morning, your former wife, Catherine, signed the final papers dissolving her marriage to you. Simultaneously, our firm executed a full acceleration clause on all outstanding commercial loans, revolving credit facilities, and real estate mortgages held by Sterling Industries."

Marcus let the words hang in the air like falling guillotine blades.

"As of 10:08 AM, every single property owned by your family—including the sprawling estate in Kensington, the commercial tower downtown, your personal bank accounts, and even the condo you so generously decided to keep—has been seized by order of the High Court to satisfy defaulted primary debt obligations."

David staggered backward, his knees buckling. He caught himself against the edge of the examination table. "No... no, that's impossible. We have millions in liquidity! We have the Meridian acquisition!"

"The Meridian acquisition fell through at 9:50 AM when the primary investor pulled out," Marcus said, offering a chillingly polite smile. "An investor who happens to be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aethelgard Holdings. The same holding company that now owns ninety percent of your family's corporate debt."

Eleanor let out a sharp, piercing shriek and collapsed backward into a chair, clutching her chest. Megan dropped her phone, the screen shattering against the hard floor.

And Allison? Allison stopped crying entirely, staring in horror at the man she thought was her golden ticket to billionaire status, realizing in a single second that she had chained herself to a sinking, bankrupt anchor.
