Chapter 7 - The Empire of Grace

Three years later, the global headquarters of Aethelgard Holdings stood proudly in the heart of London’s financial district—a towering monolith of glass, steel, and sustainable architecture that symbolized the pinnacle of modern corporate power.

From my corner office on the eighty-sixth floor, the panoramic view of the River Thames and the iconic London skyline was breathtaking.

A soft chime sounded at the door, and my executive assistant stepped inside.

"Madam Chairperson, the delegates from the international philanthropic foundation are ready for your keynote speech in the main auditorium," she announced respectfully.

"Thank you. I'll be right down," I replied, turning away from the window.

I walked over to the private vanity mirror in the corner of my office to check my appearance. I wore a classic pearl necklace, a sharp emerald-green pantsuit, and a smile that radiated absolute, unshakeable confidence.

My life was no longer defined by survival, by walking on eggshells, or by trying to earn the approval of people who measured human worth by pedigree and bank accounts.

Lily and Maya were thriving. Maya was now an award-winning junior equestrian champion studying at an elite boarding school in Geneva, while Lily was pursuing her passion for marine biology with a scholarship at Oxford. They were confident, brilliant, and completely free from the ghosts of our past.

As for the Sterling family?

Megan was working as a receptionist at a low-end dental clinic in the suburbs, her social media accounts long deleted in shame. Eleanor had passed away quietly in a modest state-funded care facility the previous winter, her grand social circle having vanished the moment the last of her estate was auctioned off.

And David? Last I heard, he was working odd jobs in regional shipping ports across Eastern Europe, constantly looking over his shoulder, haunted by the ghost of the empire he had thrown away with a single arrogant signature.

I picked up my speech notes from the desk, pausing for a moment to look at a framed photograph on my shelf.

It was a picture of Maya, Lily, and me standing on the deck of our yacht in the Mediterranean, laughing under a brilliant summer sun. There were no tears in our eyes, no hesitation in our posture, and no fear in our hearts.

Just an overwhelming silence of peace—and a future as limitless as the open sea.

I turned toward the door, ready to step out into the light, knowing that whatever storms lay ahead, I was no longer running from the battle.

I was the one holding the compass.
