Chapter 4 - The Socialite’s Descent

Within forty-eight hours, the high-society world of the Sterling family dissolved into a public spectacle of epic proportions.
The financial pages of every major newspaper carried the headline: STERLING EMPIRE CRUMBLES: MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CONGLOMERATE FILES FOR EMERGENCY BANKRUPTCY.
Social media was a bloodbath.
For years, Megan Sterling had used her Instagram account—@QueenMeganS—to mock ordinary people, flaunt luxury vacations, and publicly ridicule her sister-in-law Catherine, frequently posting condescending photos of Catherine in plain clothes with captions like: “Some women are born to sparkle, others are born to fold laundry. Thank goodness my brother traded up!”
Now, those exact posts were being shared thousands of times with mocking commentary and viral hashtags.
“Karma doesn't just knock; it kicks the door down with steel-toed boots,” read one top comment with over fifty thousand likes.
Megan sat in the empty, echoing foyer of what used to be her family’s grand manor, staring frantically at her phone. The bailiffs had already tagged the antique furniture, the grand piano, and the oil portraits of her ancestors with neon orange stickers.
"Mom, you have to do something!" Megan cried, her voice cracking with hysteria. "Call Uncle Richard! Call the governor! Do something!"
Eleanor sat stiffly on a plastic folding chair the bailiffs had left behind, looking ten years older. Her hair was unbrushed, her expensive designer suit rumpled, and her eyes hollow. The shock of the financial ruin had stripped away her arrogant facade, leaving behind a frail, defeated old woman.
"Richard won't take our calls, Megan," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling. "His bank was the first to pull their underwriting once Aethelgard Holdings flooded the market with our shorted stock."
"Where is David?" Megan demanded, pacing back and forth across the hardwood floor. "Where is that idiot? If he hadn't brought that gold-digging parasite Allison into our lives—"
"Don't you dare blame me!"
The front door slammed open, and David stumbled into the foyer. He looked like a ghost of the arrogant executive he had been just days before. His designer tie was loose and stained with coffee, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands shaking uncontrollably.
He had spent the last forty-eight hours trying to reach Allison, only to find that her apartment was empty, her phone disconnected, and her landlord throwing her belongings onto the street after her credit cards were declined. She had vanished the moment she realized David had nothing left to offer her—not even a fake baby to trap a rich man, as it turned out the pregnancy test she had manipulated with a borrowed sample had already served its purpose in trapping David into divorcing Catherine.
"David!" Megan shrieked, marching up to him and shoving him hard against the wall. "You did this! You threw away a wife who quietly managed our family's back-end investments for a decade just to chase a cheap mistress who didn't even have your child!"
"Shut up, Megan!" David roared back, shoving her away with a vicious snarl. "How the hell was I supposed to know? Catherine was invisible! She wore off-the-rack clothes, she drove an old station wagon, she never asked for anything! I thought she was completely dependent on me!"
"You fool," Eleanor hissed from her chair, her voice dripping with venom. "We all thought so. We treated her like a servant, and all the while, she was the one holding the leash."
David sank to the floor, pulling his knees to his chest as the reality of his absolute, irredeemable ruin crashed down around him. He had lost his wealth, his status, his family name, and his dignity.

And as he stared at his trembling hands, one terrifying thought echoed endlessly in his mind:
Catherine knew. She knew the entire time, and she let us walk right off the cliff.
