Chapter 2 - 30,000 Feet Above and a Billion-Dollar Reality

Far above the Atlantic clouds, inside the secluded luxury of a private Boeing business jet, the atmosphere couldn't have been more different.

Soft ambient lighting glowed against the mahogany panels of the cabin. My two daughters, Lily and Maya, were fast asleep in plush reclining suites across the aisle, their faces relaxed, free from the dark shadows of anxiety that had haunted our household for years.

I sat by the window, sipping a cup of chamomile tea, watching the endless ocean of stars stretch out beneath us.

My phone, resting on the sleek walnut table, buzzed violently.

Missed Call: David Sterling. Missed Call: David Sterling. Missed Call: Megan Sterling. New Message from David: "Catherine, answer me right now. Where are you? What kind of sick game are you playing? Pick up!"

I picked up the device, unlocked it with a calm swipe, and blocked all three numbers permanently. No hesitation. No regret. Just a quiet, surgical removal of static from my life.

Across the aisle, Mr. Thomas Vance—no relation to Allison, despite the shared surname—looked up from his tablet. As my personal chief legal counsel and head of global operations for Aethelgard Holdings, he had managed my affairs with absolute discretion for the past five years.

"Everything alright, Madam Chairperson?" he asked, his voice low and respectful.

"Never better, Thomas," I replied, turning my gaze back to the window. My reflection stared back at me—not the exhausted, broken housewife David and his family had tormented for a decade, but a woman wearing a bespoke cashmere coat, a diamond pendant that could buy a small island, and eyes sharp enough to cut glass.

For ten years, I had played the humble, submissive wife. I had let David believe I came from nothing, that my parents were ordinary teachers who had passed away leaving me with a modest inheritance. I had swallowed his family's endless insults, enduring Megan’s snide remarks and Eleanor’s frigid disdain, all while secretly building the very empire that kept the Sterling family's failing textile and real estate conglomerate afloat through anonymous venture capital injections.

David thought he was trading down by kicking me out and keeping the condo and the SUV.

He had no idea he had just evicted his sole financial lifeline.

"The European subsidiaries have all been notified," Thomas continued, tapping the screen of his tablet. "The restructuring of Sterling Industries' debt is complete. As per your instructions, our holding company holds eighty-four percent of their primary commercial mortgages, and all revolving lines of credit are frozen effective midnight."

A faint, cold smile touched my lips. "And the divorce settlement?"

"Signed, sealed, and legally binding under international jurisdiction," Thomas confirmed. "You walked away with zero personal liabilities, full custody of the girls, and absolute ownership of every patent, trademark, and subsidiary asset registered under the maiden name you quietly reclaimed this morning."

I looked down at my hand. The heavy, ostentatious diamond ring David had given me—a symbol of his conditional affection—was gone, replaced by a vintage platinum band encrusted with rare pink diamonds.

"Let them have their day in court, Thomas," I murmured, taking a sip of my tea. "The real reckoning is just beginning."
