CHAPTER 5 — "The Woman Behind Every Betrayal"

The conference room felt colder than ever.

Every pair of eyes turned toward the elegant woman seated quietly at the far end of the table.

She hadn't spoken once during the meeting.

She hadn't needed to.

She simply watched.

Samuel's face turned pale.

"Elizabeth..."

Clara slowly looked at the woman she hadn't seen since she was eight years old.

Her mother.

The woman she believed had died in the fire.

Elizabeth Sterling stood gracefully, smoothing the sleeve of her designer jacket.

"I suppose it's time everyone finally knew the truth."

The chairman smiled through bloodied lips.

"I told you she'd never let me fall alone."

Gasps filled the room.

Victoria stared in disbelief.

"You've been working together?"

Elizabeth laughed softly.

"Working together?"

"No."

"I owned him."

The chairman's smile disappeared.

Elizabeth walked toward the massive windows overlooking the city.

"Fifteen years ago, Edward Sterling refused to sell Sterling Global."

"He believed integrity mattered more than power."

She turned slowly.

"I believed power creates integrity."

Clara felt her knees weaken.

"No..."

Elizabeth nodded.

"Yes."

"I made the deal."

"I arranged the fire."

"I convinced everyone my daughter and I had died."

The room exploded with shocked voices.

Samuel stepped forward.

"You murdered your own husband!"

Elizabeth smiled without emotion.

"I removed an obstacle."

Then she looked directly at Clara.

"And I abandoned a weakness."

Tears streamed down Clara's face.

Her entire life had been built on a lie.

But Elizabeth wasn't finished.

She pressed a remote.

Every television screen in the building came alive.

News anchors interrupted programming.

"Breaking News: Sterling Global is under investigation for decades of fraud."

Employees poured into the hallways.

Stock prices collapsed in real time.

Billions of dollars vanished within minutes.

Elizabeth whispered,

"If I can't own the company..."

"...no one will."

Just then, every phone in the room vibrated simultaneously.

One message.

One sender.

UNKNOWN

"She's still lying."

Attached was a surveillance video from fifteen years earlier.

Everyone stared.

Because the person who started the fire...

May you like

wasn't Elizabeth.

It was someone standing behind Samuel.
