Chapter 1 - The Language of Broken Shadows

Donna Elena Bellini did not look at my face; she looked at my hands.

In the quiet sanctuary of the east wing, away from the heavy-footed guards and the lingering scent of expensive cigars, the silence was absolute. For three days, she had tested me. She would intentionally sign too fast, use obsolete Sicilian gestures from her childhood, or mask her movements behind the heavy folds of her cashmere shawls.

But I did not fail. I had spent years decoding the frustrations of trapped souls, and Donna Elena was a master class in hidden fire.

On the fourth morning, as I adjusted the silk pillows behind her back, her fingers suddenly snapped into motion, sharp and violent.

"The girl with the red lips," she signed, her eyes locked on mine like twin daggers. "She smells of rot and betrayal. My son sees a queen. I see a spider."

My breath caught in my throat. She was talking about Bianca Rosetti, the beautiful daughter of the Rosetti syndicate, whom Nico Bellini was set to marry in less than two weeks.

"You see what others choose to ignore, Donna Elena," I spoke aloud, keeping my voice low while simultaneously repeating the words in smooth, comforting sign language. "But your son loves you. He will not step into a trap if we show him the teeth."

Donna Elena let out a harsh, silent breath, her hand dropping to grasp my wrist with shocking strength.

"Nico looks with his eyes, Clara," she signed urgently. "But a man in his position must learn to look with his blood. Bianca is not here for a wedding. She is here for a funeral."

Before I could ask her to elaborate, the heavy oak doors of the bedroom swung open. The sudden shift in air pressure told me everything before I even turned around.

Don Nico Bellini stepped into the room.
