Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Donna Elena did not look at the blessing scroll I held out. She looked directly at Bianca.
The silence in the room was so thick you could hear the wax dripping from the chandeliers. Bianca’s father smiled confidently, leaning against a marble pillar.
Slowly, Donna Elena raised her hands from her lap. The crowd watched, most of them unable to read the rapid, sharp movements of her fingers. But I could. And so could Nico.
"You are a disease," Donna Elena signed, her eyes flashing with a terrifying, ancient fury. "You are the daughter of a thief and the whore of a Marcone snake. You brought poison into my home, but you forgot that a mother’s blood does not run thin."
Bianca kept her fake smile plastered on her face, turning to the crowd. "Look at her... she is so emotional, she is giving us her beautiful blessing in her own quiet way. Clara, please read the translation for the guests."
I took a deep breath, stepping forward. My voice did not waver.
"Donna Elena says," I began, my voice ringing out across the ballroom, "that Bianca Rosetti is a disease. She says that Bianca has brought poison into this house, acting as the operative for Silvio Marcone to assassinate the head of the Bellini family."
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
"What insolence!" Don Rosetti roared, drawing a silver pistol from his jacket. "Nico! Are you going to let this servant insult my daughter in front of the commission?!"
May you like
"Drop the gun, Rosetti," Nico said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a weight that froze every man in the room.
From the shadows of the upper balcony, twenty Bellini soldiers appeared, their submachine guns aimed directly at the Rosetti contingent.
