Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Bianca stepped back, her face losing all its color. "Nico, darling, this is insane! The maid is lying! She’s trying to extort us! She’s just a poor, pathetic nobody who wants attention!"

Nico didn't look at Bianca. He raised his tablet, pressing a button.

Instantly, the grand audio speakers of the ballroom, usually reserved for classical music, came alive. Bianca’s own voice bounced off the gilded walls, clear, cruel, and undeniable.

"I don't care what the old hag thinks... By Friday night, the old bitch won't be able to lift a finger... Nico is an idiot... I'll be the grieving widow running the empire..."

The recording played for thirty agonizing seconds before Nico cut it off.

Don Rosetti looked at his daughter in horror. He knew the rules of the underworld. Treachery of this scale meant only one thing. He slowly lowered his gun, stepping away from Bianca, abandoning his own child to save his own skin.

"Nico... please," Bianca whimpered, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, her crimson dress pooling around her like the blood she had sought to spill. "Silvio forced me! He threatened my life! I love you, Nico!"

Nico walked down from the dais. He stopped in front of her, looking down at her with nothing but cold contempt.

"You didn't just target me, Bianca," Nico whispered, the silence in the room allowing everyone to hear his terrifying words. "You targeted my mother. You thought because she had no voice, she had no protection. You forgot that I am her voice."

He waved his hand, a simple, careless gesture. Dante and Bruno stepped forward, grabbing Bianca by her slender arms and dragging her out of the ballroom. Her screams echoed down the long hallway until the heavy outer doors slammed shut.

Nico turned back to the crowd, his eyes sweeping over the terrified guests. "The Rosetti alliance is broken. The Marcone family will be erased from the map by sunrise. Enjoy the rest of your evening."
