Chapter 3 - The Wiretapped Heart

The Bellini mansion was a web of secrets, but by the second week of October, the tension had reached a boiling point. The grand engagement dinner was set for Friday, October 18. The guest list included the heads of all five rival families, a dangerous gathering that required absolute security.

My life outside the mansion remained a fragile sanctuary. Every evening, I returned to my small apartment where Luca, my eight-year-old nephew, would jump into my arms, his dark curls smelling of laundry soap and childhood innocence.

"Did the scary man yell at you today, Mamma?" Luca asked one evening as I tucked him into bed.

"No, sweet boy," I whispered, brushing the curls from his forehead. "The man is very quiet. He just has a lot of responsibilities. Like I have with you."

"When I grow up, I'm going to buy you a house where you don't have to clean anyone's silver," he promised, his eyes heavy with sleep.

"You are my whole house, Luca," I murmured.

The next morning, the reality of the Bellini empire shattered my peaceful thoughts. I was in the library, dusting the leather-bound volumes near Nico’s private study, when I heard the low murmur of voices. The door was slightly cracked.

"The Rosetti alliance is crucial, Nico," Marco, Nico’s underboss and cousin, was saying. "Their shipping lanes will double our distribution. But your mother... she still hasn't given her approval. The family is talking. They say the Don is waiting for a mute woman to tell him how to rule."

A sudden, terrifying sound echoed through the room—the distinct thud of a heavy glass tumbler shattering against the wall.

"My mother survived a gunshot to the throat that was meant for my father," Nico’s voice was dangerously calm, vibrating with an undercurrent of raw violence. "She bled into the soil of Palermo to keep this family alive while you were still wetting your bed, Marco. If she does not sign her blessing on October 18, there is no wedding. And if anyone in this house calls her 'mute' again, I will personally ensure they never speak another word for the rest of their miserable life."

I stepped back into the shadows, my heart pounding. Nico’s loyalty to his mother was his greatest virtue—and his enemy's greatest target.
