Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

Friday, October 18.
The grand ballroom of the Bellini mansion was a spectacle of wealth and danger. Over two hundred guests filled the room—men with dark eyes and hidden weapons, women wrapped in furs and diamonds that cost more than my apartment building.
Bianca Rosetti was the star of the evening. She wore a stunning crimson gown that looked like spilled blood against the white marble floor. Her father, Don Rosetti, stood beside her, laughing loudly with the other syndicate bosses.
I stood in the corner of the room, dressed in a simple, high-necked black dress, holding the velvet box that contained the traditional Bellini blessing scroll. My hands were shaking, but my face remained an impenetrable mask.
At 9:00 p.m., the music stopped.
Nico Bellini stepped onto the raised dais at the front of the room. He looked magnificent, a dark king surrounded by wolves. He raised his crystal glass, and the room fell into an immediate, breathless silence.
"Friends, family, allies," Nico’s voice boomed through the hall, rich and powerful. "Tonight, we celebrate the future of the Bellini family. The alliance with the Rosetti syndicate will secure our peace for the next generation. But as you all know, a Bellini marriage cannot be sealed without the highest authority in our house."
He turned his head toward the side entrance. "My mother, Donna Elena Bellini."

The heavy double doors opened. Two guards rolled Donna Elena’s velvet armchair into the room. She looked frail but incredibly regal, wearing a deep navy gown, her silver hair arranged like a crown. I immediately stepped forward, taking my place right beside her chair.
Bianca glided over to the dais, her smile radiant as she knelt slightly before the older woman. "Donna Elena," Bianca said loudly so the entire room could hear. "I humbly ask for your blessing to join our families."
