Chapter 5 - What the Wire Revealed

I didn't run to the kitchen. I ran straight to the west wing, my mind racing. Teresa, the morning maid. She was the one giving Donna Elena her morning tea. That was why the older woman had been so exhausted lately.

Before I could reach the security checkpoint, a large hand clamped around my upper arm, pulling me into a recessed alcove. I was about to scream when I looked up into the piercing gray eyes of Nico Bellini.

His face was completely devoid of color. His jaw was set so tight the bone looked ready to snap through his skin. In his hand, he held a security tablet that displayed the active audio feed from the sunroom.

He had heard everything.

"Not a word, Clara," he whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, icy rage. "If you breathe a syllable of this to anyone, including my mother, I will make sure you vanish."

"She’s being poisoned, Don Bellini!" I whispered back, my terror overridden by my fierce protection of the sweet old woman. "Your morning maid is putting something in her tea! You heard Bianca—they’re trying to eliminate her before Friday!"

Nico’s grip on my arm tightened, then slowly relaxed. He looked at me, really looked at me, noticing the genuine fear and anger in my eyes. He realized I wasn't afraid for my own life; I was afraid for his mother.

"I know," Nico said softly, his voice dropping into a register that sent shivers down my spine. "Teresa has already been removed from the house. She is currently... explaining herself to my men in the basement."

He stepped closer, his chest nearly touching mine. "I need to know exactly what my mother has been signing to you. Has she told you who Silvio is?"

"Silvio Marcone," I said instantly, remembering the rival family name from my father's old taxi stories about the city's territory wars. "She signed the word 'Snake from the South' two days ago. The Marcone family controls the southern rail lines."

Nico let out a slow, terrifying breath. "Bianca thinks she plays a grand game of chess. She thinks because my mother cannot speak, she is defenseless." He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray strand of hair from my cheek, a gesture so unexpected it made my heart skip a beat. "But she forgot that my mother has a voice. You."
