Chapter 1 - THE TIDE TURNS

The laughter died instantly. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the rooftop pool, suffocating the upbeat pop music that still pumped through the speakers.
Vanessa’s smirk froze on her face. Chloe took a step back, her high heels clicking sharply against the wet tiles. The plastic bracelet Elena had just unclasped wasn't cheap plastic at all. Underneath the matte coating was a solid platinum core, engraved with a roaring silver griffin—the unmistakable crest of the Vance Group.
The Vance Group didn't just own the luxury hotel they were standing on; they owned the entire district.
"What is this joke?" Vanessa scoffed, though her voice trembled slightly. "You stole that. Security! Get this crazy girl out of here!"
Nobody moved. The head of hotel security, a towering man who had spent the last two hours ignoring Elena, rushed forward. But he didn't grab Elena. Instead, he bowed deeply, his face pale with terror. "Miss Vance... I am so profoundly sorry. We didn't know you were conducting the operational audit personally."
Elena didn't look at the security guard. She wrung the water out of her long hair, her expression entirely serene, yet her eyes held the cold precision of a judge pronouncing a sentence.
"You don't need to apologize, Marcus," Elena said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent rooftop. "You were just following the culture established by our VIP clients. A culture where money buys the right to strip someone of their dignity."
"Miss Vance?" Chloe’s voice cracked. She looked at the platinum emblem, then at Elena’s face. The realization hit her like a physical blow. Elena wasn't just any Vance. She was Elena Vance, the reclusive sole heiress to the Vance empire, a woman whose face was kept strictly out of the press by her protective billionaire father, Arthur Vance.
Vanessa tried to recover her composure, laughing nervously. "Elena... come on. It was just a harmless prank! A little joke to liven up the party. We're all peers here. Our fathers do business together."
"My father does business with partners, Vanessa," Elena replied softly, stepping closer. The water dripping from her uniform pooled around Vanessa’s expensive designer shoes. "Not with parasites."
Elena pulled a small, waterproof recording device from her uniform pocket—the standard equipment for pool attendants to log safety incidents. She pressed play. Vanessa and Chloe’s cruel laughter, their mocking comments about her being "just staff," and the distinct sound of the push echoed clearly through the microphone.

"This gala is being broadcasted live to our international investors in the VIP lounge downstairs," Elena said, tilting her head. "And this audio feed? It just went live to the main media wall in the lobby."
Vanessa’s phone buzzed violently. Then Chloe’s. Then every single guest’s phone on the rooftop began to chime simultaneously. The public relations nightmare had just begun.
