Chapter 4 - THE ARREST

The trap was sprung with devastating speed. The next morning, federal agents arrived at the Vance corporate headquarters.
Flashbulbs blinded the entrance as Elena was escorted out of the building by two officers. She wasn't in handcuffs, but the image of her being led away by law enforcement shook the financial world. The headlines were savage: "FROM HEIRESS TO FRAUD: THE DARK DOUBLE LIFE OF ELENA VANCE."
Vanessa and Chloe watched the news from a private viewing room, popping a bottle of expensive champagne. For the first time in weeks, they laughed.
"Look at her now," Vanessa cheered, clinking her glass against Chloe’s. "She thought she could ruin us. Now she’s the one going to jail."
"Julian really delivered," Chloe agreed, taking a sip. "The internet hates her now. All the people who praised her for standing up to us are now calling her a hypocrite."
Later that afternoon, Elena sat calmly in an interrogation room. Across from her sat a stern federal prosecutor and Julian, who had arrived under the guise of "family support."
"Miss Vance, the digital signatures on these offshore accounts match your private encryption keys perfectly," the prosecutor said, laying out the documents. "You face up to twenty years for grand fraud and embezzlement. Do you have anything to say?"
Elena looked at the documents, then raised her eyes to Julian. He gave her a sympathetic, mocking smile. "Just confess, Elena. Save Uncle Arthur the heartbreak of a long trial."
Elena smiled. It was the same calm, unbothered smile she had worn right before she climbed out of the rooftop pool.
"Julian," Elena said softly. "Do you remember the day I became a pool attendant?"
Julian frowned. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"My father told me that to run an empire effectively, you must understand the foundation. You must watch people when they think no one important is looking," Elena explained. She leaned back in her chair. "I wasn't just auditing the hotel staff. I was auditing the network security. The encryption keys you used to frame me? They were generated from a server I personally mirrored six months ago because I knew you were skimming money from the logistics division."
Julian’s face went completely bloodless.
