CHAPTER 6 — The Countdown to Betrayal
The digital timer flashed across every classified military screen.
58:43... 58:42... 58:41...
Captain Ethan Cole looked from the encrypted drive in his hand to Major Daniel Brooks.
"Tell me the truth," Ethan demanded. "Who activated the self-destruct?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered with one name.
"The President doesn't even know this program exists."
"The order came from someone above the chain of command."
Ethan frowned.
"That's impossible."
Daniel shook his head.
"No... it's much worse than impossible."
Before he could explain further, Emma burst into the room, holding Lily tightly.
"They're coming!" she cried.
"They've surrounded the entire hospital!"
Outside, dozens of black armored vehicles sealed every entrance.
Military helicopters circled overhead.
News crews began arriving, broadcasting live.
Every television station reported the same breaking headline:
'Decorated War Hero Captain Ethan Cole Declared a Domestic Terrorist.'
Emma stared at the screen in disbelief.
"They're framing you..."
Victor Kane smiled.
"People only believe the first story they hear."
Within minutes, social media exploded.
Millions believed Ethan had stolen classified weapons.
Millions believed he had taken hostages.
His face appeared on every news channel under one word:
WANTED.
Lily looked up at her father with frightened eyes.
"Daddy... are we the bad guys?"
Ethan knelt despite the pain and gently held her shoulders.
"No, sweetheart."
"We're the ones they're afraid of."
Suddenly, Daniel inserted both encrypted drives into a portable decoder.
The screen flickered.
A single video file appeared.
PROJECT PHOENIX – FINAL RECORDING
Daniel pressed PLAY.
The room fell silent.
The video showed Ethan's unit moments before the explosion eight years earlier.
Then the camera turned toward the man giving the execution order.
Everyone expected to see Victor Kane.
Instead...
The room froze.
Emma covered her mouth.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Even Victor Kane's confident smile disappeared.
Standing on the screen...
Giving the order to eliminate Ethan's entire squad...
Was Ethan's own father.
General Richard Cole.
The most respected military hero in the country.
The man Ethan had spent his entire life trying to make proud.
Victor whispered with a cruel grin,
"Now you understand."
"You were never betrayed by your country..."
"You were betrayed by your family."
As Ethan stared at the screen in disbelief, his phone suddenly rang.
An unknown number.
He answered without speaking.
A calm, familiar voice said only one sentence:
"Son..."
"If you want your wife and daughter to survive..."
