CHAPTER 8 — The Truth That Changed Everything

The masked commander slowly removed the rest of his tactical gear.

Every soldier inside the fortress lowered their weapons.

Not out of fear...

Out of respect.

Richard Cole staggered backward.

His face had turned ghostly white.

"You..."

"I watched you die."

The old man smiled.

"No."

"You watched another man die in my place."

He stepped forward.

"My name is Jonathan Phoenix."

"The founder of Project Phoenix."

Ethan's heart pounded.

For thirty years, Jonathan Phoenix had been officially listed as dead.

History books called him a war hero.

Government records called him a legend.

But the man standing before him was very much alive.

Jonathan looked directly at Ethan.

"I've been waiting for you since the day you were born."

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Jonathan pulled an old photograph from his jacket.

It showed two young soldiers standing side by side.

One was Richard Cole.

The other was Jonathan.

Between them stood a pregnant woman, smiling brightly.

Ethan froze.

It was his mother.

Jonathan's voice became soft.

"Richard raised you..."

"But he isn't your biological father."

The words hit Ethan harder than any bullet ever could.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

Jonathan slowly nodded.

"Your mother hid the truth to protect you."

"Because the day you were born..."

Project Phoenix decided your bloodline was too dangerous to exist."

Richard closed his eyes.

For the first time in decades...

The proud general cried.

"I lied to you your entire life."

"I became one of them because they promised to spare you."

Jonathan interrupted him.

"They lied."

"They murdered your wife anyway."

Richard collapsed to his knees.

Everything he had sacrificed...

Everything he had protected...

Had been built on a lie.

Suddenly, Lily's voice echoed through Ethan's earpiece.

"Daddy!"

"They found us!"

Gunfire erupted on the other end of the call.

Emma screamed.

Daniel shouted orders.

Then...

Silence.

The connection went dead.

Ethan's entire body froze.

Jonathan grabbed his shoulder.

"There isn't much time."

"The people chasing your family aren't soldiers."

"They're the true leaders of Phoenix."

Richard slowly looked up, tears filling his eyes.

"You still don't understand..."

Jonathan turned toward Ethan.

"The organization doesn't want your evidence."

"They already destroyed every copy."

Ethan stared at him.

"Then why are they hunting my family?"

Jonathan looked directly into Lily's photograph lying on the table.

His answer chilled everyone in the room.

"Because the evidence was never inside the teddy bear..."

"It was never inside the memory chip..."

"It was hidden in Lily."

Ethan's blood ran cold.

Jonathan continued.

"When Lily was born..."

"Your wife secretly used an experimental DNA archive developed by your mother."

"Every classified file..."

"Every identity..."

"Every financial record..."

Was encoded into Lily's genetic sequence."

Richard whispered in horror,

"My God..."

"She's the only living key."

Jonathan nodded.

"And if Phoenix captures her..."

"They won't erase the truth."

"They'll rewrite it forever."

Outside the fortress, hundreds of helicopters suddenly filled the night sky.

A deafening voice echoed through loudspeakers.

"Captain Ethan Cole... surrender the child."

"This is your final warning."

Ethan slowly picked up his rifle.

He looked at Jonathan.

He looked at Richard.

Then he looked toward the burning horizon where Emma and Lily were waiting.

With absolute determination, he whispered,

"They don't want the evidence anymore..."

"They want my daughter."

May you like

"And they'll have to kill me first."
