Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the MachineThe technician’s fingers flew across the keyboard, the monitor casting a harsh blue glow over Damian Moretti’s sharp jawline. Outside the glass walls of the private study, the tension in the mansion was palpable. The thirty elite guests trapped downstairs were whispering; Vanessa Sterling was pacing outside the locked doors like a caged panther.

"Sir," the technician murmured, his brow furrowing. "The files weren't just loaded onto this card. They were beamed here via a localized micro-transmitter hidden inside the portrait’s frame. Someone with internal access set this up weeks ago."

Damian’s eyes narrowed. "Internal access."

"Yes. And look at the metadata on the latest file batch." The technician clicked a mouse. "Timestamp: 6:45 PM today. Right before the guests arrived. Someone pulled this card out of the transmitter to swap it, or... they panicked when the portrait was moved."

Damian remembered Clara Hayes standing behind that heavy wooden frame, holding the card as if it were a live grenade.

"Check the security logs for the third-floor east wing," Damian ordered, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous register that made even his fiercest capos sweat. "Every keycard swipe between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM."

"Working on it now... Oh." The technician stopped typing. "Sir, the log for the east wing archive room has been wiped. Completely scrubbed. Except for one manual override entry."

"Whose?"

"A guest pass," the technician swallowed hard. "Issued under the name of Julian Sterling. Vanessa’s brother."

The air in the room turned to ice. Julian Sterling—a man drowning in millions of dollars of gambling debt, sitting downstairs drinking champagne and celebrating a merger with the Moretti family.

Damian straightened his jacket. The puzzle pieces clicked into place with terrifying precision. Vanessa hadn't just reacted out of sudden malice when she dumped the paint on Clara; she had panicked because she knew what was hidden in that wall, and she thought Clara had uncovered her family's corporate espionage.

"Keep digging," Damian commanded, turning toward the door. "Lock down Julian’s phone and pull his recent bank statements."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti."

As Damian strode out into the hallway, he knew one thing for certain: the engagement party was over, and the war had just begun.
