Chapter 7 - Shadows in BaltimoreThree weeks later, the dust from the engagement disaster had settled into a grim, efficient routine. Clara had transformed into Damian’s shadow—managing his schedule, auditing his corporate accounts, and uncovering three more internal leaks planted by rival syndicates in Baltimore.

It was midnight. The office was quiet, save for the hum of the air conditioning and the tapping of Clara’s keyboard.
Damian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the glittering lights of Manhattan. A single dossier lay open on Clara’s desk, illuminated by her desk lamp.
"You're working too late, Clara," Damian murmured without turning around.
"Someone has to make sure your Baltimore shipping docks aren't being used as a front for contraband while you're busy brooding," she replied, not looking up from her screen.
Damian chuckled, a low, resonant sound that vibrated through the quiet room. He walked over, leaning casually against the edge of her desk, invading her personal space in a way that made her pulse spike—not with fear, but with an entirely different kind of awareness.
"The Baltimore situation is handled," Damian said softly. "My men intercepted the shipment an hour ago. The mole inside the port authority has been dealt with."
Clara finally stopped typing and looked up. Because he was leaning over the desk, their faces were only inches apart. She could see the fine flecks of silver in his eyes, smell the familiar mix of cedar and rain.
"You didn't tell me you were running a sting operation tonight," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave.
"You have enough on your plate auditing the European accounts," Damian replied, his gaze dropping momentarily to her lips before rising back to her eyes. "And besides... I didn't want you distracted."
"Distracted by what?"
"By the fact that I haven't been able to think about anything else for the last three weeks except the way you stood under that chandelier covered in white paint, looking at me like you wanted to either murder me or kiss me."
Clara’s breath caught in her throat. The professional barrier they had carefully maintained began to fray at the edges.
"And which one did you think it was?" she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Damian reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing the jawline where the paint had once run. His touch was electric, sending a shiver straight down her spine.
"I was hoping for a combination of both," he murmured, leaning in closer.
Before their lips could meet, the secure emergency terminal on the corner of the desk flashed a violent, blinking red light. An automated voice broke the silence: 'Alert. Unauthorized data ping detected from an external secure server. Location: Geneva, Switzerland.'

Damian stopped, his eyes flashing from dark warmth back to lethal calculation in a fraction of a second. He pulled back slowly, his jaw tight.
"It seems," Damian said, his voice cold as steel, "our enemies aren't done yet."
