Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionBack upstairs, Clara was standing by the window, watching the police cruisers pull through the iron gates of the estate, their red and blue lights painting erratic streaks across the manicured lawns.

A knock sounded at the door. This time, it opened before she could answer.

Damian walked in, loosening his silk tie and tossing it onto the nearest armchair. He looked tired—not the tired of a tired businessman, but the heavy fatigue of a man who had just narrowly avoided stepping on a landmine.

"They're locked in the west wing," Damian said, walking over to the minibar and pouring two fingers of neat bourbon into a crystal glass. He didn't drink it; he just stared at the amber liquid. "Julian confessed to everything. Vanessa is currently threatening to sue me, God help her, unaware that she’s about to face twenty years for corporate conspiracy and wire fraud."

Clara turned away from the window, keeping a respectful distance. "I'm glad your empire is safe, Mr. Moretti."

Damian turned his head, his gaze fixing on her. "My empire is safe. But my evening was thoroughly ruined. And an employee of mine was publicly humiliated in my own home."

"That wasn't your fault."

"Everything that happens under this roof is my responsibility," Damian said firmly. He walked closer, stopping just a few feet away. Up close, without the harsh gallery lights, she noticed how striking his gray-flecked eyes were. "Which brings me to a dilemma."

Clara tilted her head. "What dilemma?"

"You know too much about my family's internal security failures. You have a sharp eye, a steady nerve, and you clearly don't intimidate easily." Damian set the glass down on a table. "If I let you go back to changing sheets and cleaning silver, someone in my organization—or one of Vanessa’s remaining associates—might decide you're a loose end."

Clara’s breath hitched. "Are you threatening me, Mr. Moretti?"

"I am offering you a promotion," Damian corrected smoothly. "My personal confidential secretary resigned last month under suspicious circumstances. I need someone intelligent, observant, and fiercely loyal to manage my private schedule and audit my estate operations."

Clara stared at him in disbelief. "You want to make the maid your confidential secretary?"

"I want to make the woman who outsmarted my fiancée and saved my company my confidential secretary," Damian corrected, his tone leaving no room for argument. "The salary is ten times what you make now. Full security detail. And complete immunity from anyone in this house who thinks they can disrespect you."

Clara’s mind raced. It was an astronomical leap—a chance to change her life overnight. But it also meant stepping directly into the viper’s nest of the Moretti criminal underworld.

"And if I say no?" she asked quietly.

"Then I will write you a check for fifty thousand dollars, give you a secure car to any city in the country, and ensure you are never bothered again," Damian said honestly.

Clara looked at him for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a confident, knowing smile touched her lips—mirroring the exact expression he had worn earlier.

"Fifty thousand dollars sounds nice, Mr. Moretti," Clara said, stepping forward until she was close enough to smell the faint scent of cedar and expensive cologne on his suit. "But I think watching you dismantle your enemies from the inside sounds much more interesting."

Damian’s eyes flared with a mix of surprise and deep, predatory satisfaction.

"Welcome aboard, Miss Hayes," he whispered.
