Chapter 17 - THE NEW DAWNTitle: Returning to the Sanctuary: Life After the Storm

Three weeks later, the morning sun bathed the sprawling courtyards of the Dantis estate in a warm, golden embrace. The bulletproof glass of the nursery had been replaced with reinforced stained glass; the security grids had been upgraded; and the air smelled not of gunpowder, but of blooming jasmine and freshly cut grass.

In the center of the North Lawn, twelve rescued dogs chased each other across pristine turf, barking happily as they leaped over agility hurdles supervised by two guards who had long since traded their earpieces for tennis balls.

Daisy sat on a wooden Adirondack chair on the grand veranda, a steaming mug of herbal tea in one hand and a thick veterinary ledger in the other. Resting comfortably across her feet was Barnaby, his tail giving a lazy, contented thump against the wooden planks every time she scratched behind his massive ears.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path below.

Aleandro walked up the stone steps. He wore a simple black t-shirt and jeans—no tailored suit, no holstered gun, no heavy silk tie. The terrifying mafia warlord of New York had quietly stepped down from the day-to-day operations of the syndicate, handing the regional portfolios over to a council of trusted capos while he focused entirely on legitimate real estate, shipping logistics, and protecting his family.

He stopped beside her chair, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss to the top of her dark curly hair.

"You're auditing the animal sanctuary budget again," Aleandro noted with a faint, amused smile, looking down at the ledger.

"We need specialized orthopedic bedding for three older golden retrievers we took in from the Yonkers shelter yesterday," Daisy replied without looking up, though a soft smile played across her lips. "And premium joint supplements aren't cheap, Mr. Dantis."

"Everything they need, they get," Aleandro said firmly, pulling up a chair and sitting directly across from her, taking her free hand in his calloused grip. "You know that."

Daisy looked up, her clear hazel eyes sparkling with mischief. "You used to be a ruthless mafia boss who terrified everybody on the Eastern Seaboard. Now you're just a glorified dog dad."

May you like

"I am whatever you need me to be, Daisy," Aleandro answered softly, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unwavering devotion. "As long as I get to sit right here beside you."

Barnaby let out a loud, theatrical sigh, shifting his massive weight so his head rested comfortably across both of their laps, trapping them together in a perfect, unbreakable circle of warmth.
