Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFESSIONTitle: Curled Up in the Boss’s Arms: When the Mafia Enforcer Showed His Soft Spot

The smoke cleared from the dining room, replaced by the acrid stench of cordite and the cold draft blowing in through the shattered floor-to-ceiling windows. The shattered glass crunched beneath heavy boots as Salvatore and three senior capos cleared the perimeter, dragging the surviving Moretti operative out toward the interrogation cells in the basement.
Aleandro stood slowly, offering a large, calloused hand to Daisy. She took it, letting him pull her up from the floor. Her knees felt weak, not just from the shock of the firefight, but from the sudden, jarring realization that the man holding her hand was responsible for empires built on blood and violence.
"Your dress is ruined," Aleandro noted quietly, his eyes sweeping over the torn hem and soot-stained silk of the emerald gown.
"Your dining room is ruined," Daisy countered, her voice steady despite the lingering tremor in her hands. She looked down at the shattered crystal and bullet-riddled family portraits. "I think the score is even."
Aleandro let out a low, humorless breath. He reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of dark curly hair away from her damp forehead. His touch was surprisingly tender—so gentle that it felt entirely out of place in a room that had turned into a literal war zone ten minutes prior.
"You shouldn't be here," Aleandro said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register. "The Morettis know we brought an outsider into the estate. That makes you a target. By dawn, every syndicate boss from here to Chicago will know that Aleandro Dantis is keeping a plus-size veterinary assistant in his private quarters."
"Let them know," Daisy snapped, her chin tilting up with fierce, stubborn pride. "I'm not a hostage, Aleandro. And I'm certainly not going to hide in a bunker just because some thugs in ski masks wanted to ruin my dinner."
Aleandro stared at her, a profound look of awe flickering briefly across his hardened features. For a man who commanded thousands of men through fear and absolute obedience, a woman standing before him in a ruined silk dress, dressed down and defiant, was the most intoxicating thing he had ever encountered.
"Come," he said softly, taking her by the hand and leading her away from the ruined dining room.
"Where are we going? My room is down the other hall."
"Your room has shattered windows and a draft," Aleandro replied without breaking stride. "You're sleeping in my quarters tonight."
Daisy opened her objection, but one look at the stubborn, unyielding set of his jaw told her arguing would be a waste of breath.
Aleandro’s personal suite was located at the very end of the third-floor corridor—a massive, vaulted chamber dominated by a stone fireplace, dark mahogany bookshelves filled with historical texts and ledgers, and a massive king-sized bed covered in dark furs and wool blankets. It smelled faintly of sandalwood, leather, and expensive bourbon.
From the corner near the fireplace, a heavy thud announced Barnaby’s arrival. The massive cane corso trotted over, letting out a low, anxious whine as he nudged Daisy’s hand with his wet nose, checking to make sure she was unharmed.
"Oh, sweet boy, I'm okay," Daisy melted instantly, dropping to her knees to bury her face in the dog's thick neck. Barnaby let out a deep, contented sigh, wrapping his heavy body around her like a protective furry shield.
Aleandro poured two fingers of amber-colored bourbon into a heavy crystal tumbler, taking a slow sip as he leaned against the stone mantelpiece, watching the two of them.
"He never let anyone close after my brother died," Aleandro said quietly, his voice carrying an unexpected shadow of vulnerability.
Daisy looked up from the dog, her eyes softening. "Your brother?"
"Five years ago," Aleandro said, swirling the liquor in his glass. "Vincenzo was the soft one. The one who believed we could legitimate the empire through real estate and shipping before the commission agreed. He raised Barnaby from a pup. When the Commission executed him for insubordination, Barnaby was in the car. He watched them do it. After that... he didn't trust a single soul wearing a suit, holding a gun, or smelling like blood."
Daisy listened in silence, her heart aching for both the massive dog and the cold, terrifying mafia boss who carried the weight of a criminal empire on his shoulders. She stood up, walking slowly across the rug until she stood just inches away from Aleandro.
"And you?" Daisy asked softly, her gaze searching his face. "Who protects you when you're carrying all that guilt?"

Aleandro looked down at her, stunned by the raw empathy radiating from her eyes. For the first time in his life, the impenetrable wall around his soul cracked. Without thinking, he reached out, pulling her gently against his chest. Daisy didn't pull away; she wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his solid, warm shoulder as Barnaby settled heavily across their feet.
In the heart of the Dantis Empire, surrounded by enemies and blood, the mafia boss and the veterinary assistant stood together in the dark, finding a dangerous, unspoken sanctuary in each other's arms.
