Chapter 8 - THE BLACKMAILED GOVERNORTitle: The Political Pawn: When Daisy Interrupted a Mafia Extortion Meeting

The morning sun barely crested the eastern wall of the Dantis estate when the heavy oak doors of Aleandro’s ground-floor conference room swung open. Inside, surrounded by leather-bound law books and antique maps of New York Harbor, sat one of the most powerful politicians in the state: Governor Harrison Vance.

Governor Vance looked pale, sweating profusely despite the room's crisp air conditioning. He clutched a leather briefcase tightly in his lap as Aleandro sat across from him, looking entirely relaxed, swirling a cup of black espresso.

"You're playing a very dangerous game, Aleandro," the Governor stammered, his voice cracking slightly. "If the federal prosecutor gets a hold of these offshore bank records—"

"The federal prosecutor will never see those records, Governor, because they don't exist," Aleandro interrupted smoothly, his tone ice-cold. "They are currently floating safely in a digital vault that only opens when your administration signs off on the commercial zoning permits for the Brooklyn shipping yards."

Before the Governor could sputter a reply, the conference room door clicked open.

Daisy strolled right into the middle of a high-stakes mafia extortion meeting wearing a faded oversized gray sweatshirt that read Paws & Claws Rescue, holding a half-empty mug of coffee in one hand and a digital tablet in the other.

The Governor froze, staring at her as if she were a ghost. Aleandro’s eyes widened slightly, a rare look of panic flashing across his composed features.

"Oh, sorry," Daisy said cheerfully, blinking at the Governor's terrified expression. "Salvatore said I could use the printer in the auxiliary office down the hall, but it keeps jamming on cyan ink. Do you guys happen to know how to open the toner cartridge?"

Silence descended upon the room so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Governor Vance slowly turned his head to look at Aleandro, his jaw slack. "Aleandro... who in God's name is this? Is this your... Is this a witness? An undercover federal agent?"

Aleandro rubbed the bridge of his nose, letting out a heavy, defeated sigh. "Governor Vance, meet Daisy Harper. Daisy, Governor Vance."

"Oh!" Daisy brightened, setting her coffee mug down on a priceless mahogany table with a soft clack. She extended a hand toward the sweating politician. "Pleased to meet you. You look stressed. Have you tried chamomile tea? Or maybe a mild sedative? My rescue beagle gets that exact same twitch in his left eyelid whenever he's forced into formal social situations."

Governor Vance slowly raised a trembling hand and shook hers, completely paralyzed by confusion. "I... I'm a registered Republican..."

"Nobody cares about your political party, Governor," Daisy said breezily. "Anyway, sorry to interrupt your little blackmail meeting. Carry on with the shipping permits. Just make sure the loading docks have adequate drainage for animal transport vans."

With a cheerful wave, Daisy turned on her heel and strolled out of the room, leaving the most powerful politician in the state staring blankly at the door.

Aleandro cleared his throat, slowly turning his dark, dangerous gaze back toward the Governor. "Now, where were we? Ah, yes... the zoning permits."

Governor Vance swallowed hard, suddenly realizing that the mafia boss’s mysterious new assistant was far more terrifying than any weapon in the Dantis arsenal.
