Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Sanctuary

My pulse spiked as I stared at the high-definition monitor. Only three people on earth knew the true identity behind The Sovereign's digital mantle, and two of them were currently buried six feet beneath the Chicago mud. The third was sitting in a federal maximum-security prison—or so I had believed.

I wiped the logs, erased the Zurich server, and triggered an automated cleanup protocol before heading back upstairs. But as I stepped out into the dimly lit hallway, the silhouette of a man framed against the moonlight nearly made me draw the weapon hidden in my silk robe.

Dante stood leaning against the doorframe, his dark eyes fixed on me with an intensity that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "You're walking in your sleep again, Lena," he said softly, his deep voice carrying a dangerous edge. He stepped closer, his thumb reaching out to trace my jawline. "Or is there something in the dark that's keeping my wife awake?"

"Just a nightmare," I lied smoothly, leaning into his touch to mask the slight tremor in my fingers. "I thought I heard one of the babies." Dante didn't blink. He reached down and gently grabbed my right wrist, his calloused thumb resting directly over my racing pulse. He knew the biological markers of a lie better than any polygraph test on earth. "Your heart is beat-racing at 120 beats per minute, Lena. You haven't looked at me like that since the night you walked out of my office in Chicago."
